Recently tore down an old barn and evidently it was a rat haven..we killed them all or THOUGHT we had...one day I went to town and my 2004 4X4 Explorer's ABS light came on and 4X4 flashes...looked under the hood and found that the rats had chewed on several of my wires..I am attaching a picture of one of the wires..I have no idea what it is and was wondering if anyone can point me to the ABS and 4X4 wiring because I really don't want to take it to Ford if I can get around it.
Happens a lot in the country. I get several a year like this, either rat or squirrel chewed. Some get quite destructive and can chew off dozens of wires.
This happened to a Camaro I had and they built nests inside an intake hose and had a great old time in there. It was pretty much unsalvageable as far as the wiring went. The car had been sitting for a while though in the country no less.
Hmm, set of wires above the water inlet on the block. Since you say the 4wd light is showing an error, maybe the wires are tied to some sort of switching system for the 4wd. I am assuming this would be a vaccum type automatic locking hub arrangement. Since I'm really unfamiliar with this vehicle all I could suggest was trying to read up on wiring diagrams from a haynes/chilton manual and try to trace the colors of the wires to those in the diagram. Make sure they haven't chewed vaccuum lines up too, that could cause a huge problem also.
Sorry, that's not much help, but there's a lot of smart people around here, I'm sure someone will be familiar with that particular wire bundle.
How about seeing if a buddy, or a local library has a 2003 manual, I think that is out and that might get you at least a step closer. I know, I say this now, but maybe they're not too dissimilar. Good luck!
Leave some traps in there with peanut butter. Probably too many to kill. LOL
