Hi, I have recently spotted a Ford engine in the local Junk yard, I have been looking for either a 352 or 390, no one at this yard knows what the engine actually is, it shure looks to me like a big block engine and all I could find today was a head casting number, the number was C7TE-C, if anyone could tell me what the engine might be would appreaciate it, I am in a area where IO just have not been able to locate a engine that is close so I am hoping this engine might be what I am looking for, I have never worked with the Ford Big block engines or owned them before so this is why I am not shure what this engine is, any replies would be appreaciated thanks.
First, I must say welcome to FTE. A great bunch of guys with a great bunch of knowledge. You should definately check out the FAQ's on FE engines posted by Ratsmoker in this section. You will be surprised how much info is there.
By the way, the only way to tell the difference from 352 and 390 is to measure the stroke. They both have 4.00" bore but the stroke of the 352 is 3.50" while the 390 is 3.784". Pull a spark plug and measure piston travel with a wooden dowel while you turn the engine over by hand with a breaker bar and socket. Have fun!!
Hey where ya located I have a spare 390 needs rebuild but have heads crank ect. Also to help you in your search 390 and 352 blocks from the 60's ( not sure if ford did that in 70's( not sure on other f.e's) have 352 wrote on the outside casing. Reason being is 352 is the start of the 390 block's.
HI, thanks for the replies, the block does have 352 on it, that is what had me wondering also, I am in Salida,Colorado, I am looking for either a 352 or 390 engine here, it sounds like from what I have found out this engine I seen is a a big block then, I am not shure which displacement but was good to find as much as I have so far about it, I think the Ft is a the truck engine I could be wrong someone might be able to tell you better than myself here, I have only worked on the Ford 223 and 200 in line 6 cylinder engines so far, so the v8 family of engines in their line is all new to me here so far, anyway thanks for the replies if you are close by let me know as I am looking for one of these engines.
I could be mistaken but the FT is the Truck versions of the FE. The FT's were in the larger trucks(not f100-f350). Some of the FT and FE parts are interchangable and some are not..
I am fairly new to this stuff and slowly reading and learning before attempting to do my first engine rebuild..
Yes the FT is the brother to the FE. They use low compression heads with poor flow. They do not make any power above 3,000 revs. They make exrtemely large amounts of tq at very low RPM's. I dont reccomend them for a driver or anything unless its a dump truck. In my opionion the FE's are much better sutited for trucks then the FT's. Course this is light trucks im talking about. FT = Ford Truck. FE = huge argurments about what it means.
Well at least no one said ft stood for ford trash. Dont think I can handle that.
I know a few of the basics but beyond that am lost.
Heck I have a 390 I am building for my project car but it been 16 years since I have put a motor together from scratch.
Well, you can't get back into it any younger. So are you doing a 390 and a 352 both at the same time or did I miss something? If you go thru both of these projects all the way by yourself you will know FE's pretty good. The guys on this forum are always more than willing to help if you get stuck, so have fun with the rebuilds!!
No I am doing a 390 maybe 2. Not 352 was letting my1958 know that 352 and 390's know that they were stamped 352 as I had read in many articles. Thanks and am glad to be a member.

If you can pick it up cheap, grab the C7TE block. They often come with the reinforced main webbing and thick cylinder cores. With a sonic check they can often be bored to 428 specs. I am not positive, but I also believe if it is a FT block they come with the steel crank that can be tunred down at the snout and re-keyed to make a steel 427 crank.
