Well, after my christmas no start, and a new IP timed up my truck is running again, and seams to run well, however it now has a very definite clunk clunk ie like a failed rod bearing. Compression test all 400- 420 except hole #7 @ 280! So bent rod, cracked piston?! Rockers, pushrod and valve springs all OK on #7, so I am about to pull the engine.
My question is has anybody bought a rebuilt 7.3 from Hiperformer out of Spokane Wa. Their web site and testimonials all look good and claim only a 1.7% warranty claim. No major engine shop around B.C. here deals with 7.3 IDI's, they have all steered me to auto wreckers - humph.
Will see what I find, but with 282,000km, (175,225miles) I think I would be just as far ahead to get a long block at 3250 USD as try to repair my high milage motor!?
Any thoughts appreaciated.
Personally I'd for for a 6.9 which can be bored out. Rebuilt 7.3's are sleeved due to the thinner cylinder walls and I've heard some horror stories on here about sleeved rebuilt 7.3's
Anybody know about Hiperformer- local business name S&S engines in Spokane.
Or any rebuilders in Sothern B.C. area. Started pulling engine- no coolant or metal in the oil, so I may get luck with a repair.
Don't know of any rebuilders that I would recommend to build an IDI. Hardly anyone bothers with them around here. If its not a cummins or a screaming chevy small block no one really knows what you're talking about.
TER holdings here in town is pretty good but I don't know how good they are with diesels like this. I can tell you right now they won't have a long block for exchange in stock but they could help with rebuilding your engine (or do it all at for $$ and time).
They are the shop I went to when I rebuilt my engine. Ordered all the major parts and had the block refreshed there.
Thanks David, will see what I need once I get it appart. So all the rest of you IDI'er beware- not many business's willing to support these engines anymore, look after what you have!
Found my #7 connecting rod bent- may have been a stroke of luck, as I will now proceed with a rebuilt once I get things measured up. Turns out all of the connecting rod bearings are showing wear, some of them starting to show copper, so a rebuild before any other abnormal wear the crankshaft or other bits. Also a bit of luck, this block is a "Turbo IDI" 1809000C3 casting - is suppose to be a stronger block, and has the bigger piston pins- so definatly worth rebuilding. Hardly any noticeable wear in the cyclinders, and water jackets look very clean- hopefull no cavitation worries. Does anyone know if the C3 blocks had thicker cylinder walls??
These Engines are fine up to 500k-700k if you take care of them. My 6.9 is from 1986 and has 575,824 miles on it. Still runs but has a blown head-gasket. Just replace your bearing set and your connecting rod that is bent. If all your other parts on the engine are fine i would replace whats needed, put her back together and throw her back in the truck. Make sure you use SCA's. They will stop cavitation, you should be testing your engine regularly.
I've always added the Ford SCA additive since I've owned the truck- 6 years, from what I can see of inside the water jacket its as clean as can be (looks like a greenish glazing)-as was the coolant. So I dont really think there are any issuse re cavitation, but will pressure check just to be safe.
Thanks Dave, already talked to them, don't do rebuilds anymore- sent me in the direction of the wreckers. Anyway, looks like a overhaul kit in my near future, any body bought the kits on e-bay from Grumpys Performace in Oregon?
