You are pressing the envelope of disaster with the 3.o at that speed in the Aerostar unless it is a new engine. I have a 93 4.0 but don't press it over 80. If I want to go faster I pull a supercharged two door coupe out of the barn. What could be happening is your oil pressure is dropping because the engine is worn. Or as I have seen in the past the oil is not draining back fast enough to the oil pan. The oil pump is running short of oil. Watch your oil gauage or better yey get a real one. Also you could be running lean because of a weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filter etc. Worn plugs or distributor parts could also cause some fireing problems. Good luck.
>When I´m driving my Aerostar 3.0 -89 a bit hard, 90mp/h.
>the "check engine" light, lights up.....
>Have ordered the Haynes book so that in next week I can
>check the ECU for codes
Until you can get the ECU to tell you what IT thinks is wrong, you'd be just guessing. Hell, I can pull a rabbit out of a hat: TPS will be my guess (it's my default guess but probably wrong for this symptom), but really, it could be nearly anything. The EGO sensor could go out of spec when really hot. The fuel filter might be getting restricted (though it's plenty large, and will handle a lot of crap in it), or any one of a number of things.
Get the Haynes, count the analog voltmeter sweeps (do it several times, it's easy to make a misteak), and tell us the results -- then we can guess with authority!
Um, 90, eh? I've got the digital dash on my '89, and I've been told it tops out at 85 -- not that I've ever even gotten close to that.
155 Km/h.......thats it top speed, after that there is something that shuts off the engine.......and it should be like that (written in the instructions manual)...
But travelling in about 130-135 Km/h is completely easy......then just press the pedal to the metal....and some seconds later.......155.... and thats it........
I´got rid of my drivers lisence for 5months last year....... was ticked at 152Km/h on a "110 road"..........
I´m satisfied with that...... but I can feel that It´s not completely right.......something is missing when I "step on it"........
The fuel filter, is new.....EGO is 6months...airfilter is new.....
Plugs are 6months (20 000Km)........Car is 246 000 miles........but distributor/cap and wires.... i´ve never changed themm, but will see first what the ECU tells........
last night I disconnected the battery and erased the ECU´s memory.......
Then when I drove it after that...(easy for a while)......then pushed it a bit........there felt like much more power than before....but after a while......."check engine".......
i think you push it too much. for a vehichle with 246,000 miles on it, i'm surprised the motor hasn't quit on you yet. i would slow it down a little if i were you. mine is a 92 and it shuts off at like 100 or so. yes i have had it up there, but i don't make a habbit of it, in this type of vehicle it is far too dangerous. but never-the-less fun!!!!!
I've got a 3.0 '89 aero also. The darn thing looks like it was dipped in acid cause of rustout but it still does 90mph if given enough time to do it. had it there last week. not bad for 155k. i like the motor so much, I'm gonna rebuild it better than stock and put it in my '84 Bronco II this spring. I'm thinkin that you might be having a cat clog starting after all those miles. Keep us posted
