between napa and my ford dealer I havent found what im looking for, I am 90% sure that my vss is gone and went to replace it. I though I had read that it was on the rear diff. but was told that that was the abs sensor, then i was told that it was on the transfercase, no luck finding it there, Where is this thing hiding! Ive got a 92 F250 auto, 7.3
It will be wherever the speedo cable would hook on them, I know that the cable goes in the T-case on our '84 I have never looked on our '90 to see though.
It could be, but on our '95 Dodge the vss is where the cable would hook on the older trannys or if we put it into an older truck. So if it has one it will be in the t-case, but they could very well be the same. Is the abs light on as well? it is very common on all makes of trucks for the wiring harness from the frame to the sensor on the diff to get screwed up, they are in a bad spot and always get nailed with rocks etc.
It is on the top of the rear diff, towards the front.
Wires are leading into it.
If it is gone, you will experience a few things, most notably the ABS light will be on, the OD (for automatics with OD) light will be blinking and the speedometer will be bouncing like a bat out of hell.
As well, the tranny will be hard shifting.
I have to clean the iron filings off mine every few days, even after a flush of the rear diff.
Cost is $23 CDN at a dealer
im not experiencing any of thoes things other than the hard shifting. My speedo just went dead, no movement no odometer, ive checked fuses, and the vss was the next thing that i wanted to check.
Replace the sensor before the harness.
The sensor will pick up all the iron sludge.
You may just need to wipe it clean and then replace with the same one.
The sensor is just a 'push in' fit, the bolt really only holds it from flying out during use. Make sure to push it in completely, as I noticed that if I did not have the sensor seated completely, I had REALLY hard shifting.
Almost like riding a bull backwards type of bucking...
