My timing chain broke today on my '79 302 and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on which timing chain to purchase. I was also reading on SummitRacing.com about changing my timing chain to a gear drive. What do you think about that? I've got a Competition 280 cam so hopefully that helps because I am dumbfounded. I read all the specs of all the timing chains through Summit but they all sound the same. So I was wondering if someone had some past experiences with good or bad timing chains. How should my cam be when installing my new timing chain or gear drive? Thanks.
I recently used the Edelbrock #7814 Double Roller Chain Timing Set. Instructions that came with it indicated it was a selected Cloyes Timing Set brand labelled to Edelbrock. Haven't fired engine up yet; saving for Edelbrock 4 barrell carb to go on Performer Intake.
I have an Edelbrock Performer intake. So I guess going Edelbrock would be a good idea. Any other suggestions? Was the Edelbrock recommended to you or did you just pick one?
This is my first engine build with my dad as supervisor. I chose Edelbrock for cam 2122, intake performer 302, and timing set 7814. Will use Edelbrock 1400 650cfm. I went with 7814 timing set as it has one keyway and the 7811 had three. Although I understand the rational of retarding and advancing the cam gear with the three keyways on the crank gear; I couldn't convince myself why do it on a street machine. Besides the placement of the keyways looked like alot of advance or retard.
