Unhappy Lost and Confused

New to the site but have been reading for over a year. Lot of helpful info on the site for people like me.

Here is my problem, I have a 99 250sd v10. When I bought the truck it had 172,000 miles and had a tapping noise from the motor. Read the threads about this problem and finally took it to the garage where I was told normal noise. Noise got worse and started to use oil. It got bad enough that driving 400mil. would use 1 1/2 qts 5w30 syn. Got mad!! Bought a v10 out of a 99 ecoline 34,000mil. have driven it for 3,000mil. no problems(MC 5w30 oil). Changed the oil, went on vacation 2,000mil trip got home 1qt. low. 800mil later another qt. low! Just started pinging last week the same as the last motor just not as loud!! 2300rpm 60-70mph.

Talked with the ford garage again told me that it sounds like something going out in the engine. Looking for anything posible. No codes stored, No check engine lite, No stalling or rough running.

Two engines same problem. Anyone?

Is it a rattle? There have been many that had the plate between the trans and engine that rattles and drove them crazy till they fixed it.Its hard to believe that two different engines were doing the same thing. That leaves me to believe it is something that is still on the truck. do a search for "flutter"

It is more of a tapping noise. I have checked heat sheilds and trans. plates nothing loose that I can find. Exhust heat sheild fell off somewhere around the ak/tn state line few weeks back.

Don't know if a computer problem might be washing a cyl. down causing the use of oil? It was a complete engine pull, all sensors, fuel rails, the works!

It MIGHT be a faulty driver in the computer for a particular injector - any black smoke out the tailpipe? Check the plugs, are they sooty? Or is ONE (or more) plug(s) sooty?

Isn't the intake different for an "E" series ? If so, is it possible you (or the garage) swapped the intakes? But that wouldn't cause that, unless it was leaking coolant into one of the cylinders and that should be easy to find too... (coolant will lock the rings to the piston and they won't have any "spring" anymore, causing loss of compression/oil consumption).

Are you sure you're not over-filling the crankcase with oil? It only takes 6 1/2 quarts when completely empty - filter and all.
Injectors tap (click).
Does it go away after awhile or is it constant?
What oil filter are you using?

I have not seen any smoke. I have noticed a lot of black soot on the tail pipes. Did this with org. motor, cleaned them when I changed. Have not pulled any plugs yet since they are so fun to take out. I put this motor in and it was an exact match to mine except the oil pan, oil pickup, oil dipstick & tube, pass. valve cover, and harness layout. Intake was same. Not lost any coolant.

When I changed the oil it was 6qts to top of the full mark with filter. when I added oil it was just over 1qt the first time (cold motor) to top of full. Second time it was right at 1qt to top of full (cold motor).

The noise just started again last week it is only constant if I keep it running between 65-70 mph 2300rpm no load. When it starts I can let off the gas or give it more and it will stop. Never noticed anything at slower speeds. Longer I run it the worse it gets. It is how I know the oil is getting low. Did not start loosing oil until it started tapping.

Changed the type of filter I use when I read other posts talking about filters when I bought the truck 2yrs ago. Went to MC oem filter, with an anti siphon valve.
