I purchased an '03 V10 Excursion back in '13 with about 145000 miles on it. I've added another 30,000 in the last year and a half. It's been good but has started missing and has gotten to the point where it will shut off at times and I don't know how to troubleshoot it. The MIL has never lit from the missing. Twice after it cut off the MIL was lit with a speed sensor error.
I've purchased a BAFX Products Bluetooth OBD2 interface and I've tried a couple of different Android apps with it, right now I'm using Torque Pro. It says it's an OBD I system which I saw references to in the "Why your MIL doesn't turn on" thread. I'm seen references to using Mode 6, but everything I've read seems to indicate that's an OBD II feature.
The missing gets better and worse. Some days it will seem to be fine and then other days I have to keep it rev'ed up to keep it from dying while stopping for a red light.
When it dies, it dies while stopped in drive or reverse. It has also died a couple of times while moving in reverse while connected to a 3,500lb trailer. Every time it's died it has started right back up.
I'm looking for direction on how to troubleshoot this issue. Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the suggestion, that never even crossed my mind. I'll replace the filter tomorrow and then test the fuel pressure. If it's fuel pressure related (I've been assuming spark and working from that end) it could also be the pressure regulator?
Have you pulled your cops out to see the condition of the boots? I have had some nasty misfires not set any codes and some you cant even feel set the light. To believe the back ones are known to act up when leaked on by rain water getting past the hood seal. Just another free thing to inspect before you shell out money.
If it is idling really rough and chokes down you might check your IAC (Idle Air Control Valve). It was the number one repair code at my Ford dealership back home. I know because the Service manager was a patient. I've never tried taking mine off as I've not had symptoms and it's in a difficult spot on the back side of the engine near the firewall. My son's V6 explorer did what you are describing and that's what it turned out to be. His, however, was sitting there staring at me--no challenge to get to--very boring.
It idles fine in park or neutral at about 800 RPM. Missing happens when it's in drive or reverse and either stopped (with RPMs down below 600) or during acceleration. How bad it misses varies.
And by the way, thanks for all the information, the members of this forum are awesome!
Check fuel pressure. If fuel pressure is good. You may also replace fuel filter. Replace boots on COP's. and plugs. If any of the boots have a white, grey or brown tracings on the outside consider them bad. You can sometimes pinch the boot between 2 fingers and it will expose cracks. My guess is COP boots. I purchased mine at Advance Auto Parts. It is quite likely the boots, fuel filter and plugs need replacing and this is not a waste of time nor money if you plan on keeping the X. Good luck.
Someone else here pointed me towards a cop boot kit from Denso, part number 671-0001. Came with 10 boots and springs for a great price and I'm told its OEM stuff. I installed mine a few thousand miles ago and all has been well.
If you just stop and think about it using common sense those boots are subject to around 200 degrees all the time the motor is running. So yes they are a perishable item.
Thanks for the all the suggestions. I replaced the fuel filter and tested the fuel pressure. Fuel pressure is fine. I haven't had the time to pull the COPs and replace boots and plugs yet, but that's next on my list. Thanks for the pointer @05MilMachine I will check those out.
