You didn't say anything about the condition of the engine. Since you mentioned that it used take a lot of cranking b4 it would start in the past, I'm thinking it's got high miles. This is a common problem with worn timing chain/gears. Good luck.
it could possibly be the modual or coil, try putting the coil wire near a good ground and plug and unplug the modual to see if the coil sparks. I actually have no idea if this will work but I know that on my 70's and 80's vehicles if you do that the coil will spark.
if you prime the carb and it runs for a moments then shouts off t is probly not getting fuel take off your fuel line at the carb and place a cup to catch the gas and crank it a few times it is a good way to see if your getting fuel if your not getting fuel try replacing the filter start with the ceapest thing and work you way up then if you still no geting fule the pump may be bad pull the pump and placeyour finger over the inlet side and pump it by hand see if your getting any suction it
