I have a 91 shortie and have een very happy, I just have a couple of questions Fist I replaced the outer tie rod ends and repacked both bearings inner and outer put new tires but it still feels like it wants to wander. Also with 180,000 miles the engine has lost a bit of power and am using oil at about 1 qt/1,000 miles or less. no blue smoke out the pipe though. Is is possible to put a 4.0 in it? It has a 3.o right now. Well thats enough for now.
At your current mileage, your upper ball joints are likely worn out, check those along with the inner tie rods. Engine swap involves more than just replacement. You would need to change over all the engine and powertrain control modules and assoociated plumbing and wiring that accompany that. Not saying it can't be done, just a lot of work and expense involved.
Thanks for the help. I know the engine will be a bear no matter what. Also are the inner tie rod ends in the stearing box I looked in the Haynes and Chiltons manual and they say nothing about inner tie rod ends. Thanks a bunch!
The inner rod is the threaded rod the outer tie rod end screws onto and goes back into the rubber bellows (boot) on the steering rack. Inside the rubber boot, the rod has a swivel ball joint. Best way to tell if you have wear is to have a helper turn the steering wheel back and forth while you hold the rod and feel if there is noticeable play coming from the rubber boot side. There should be no play at all. Normally, these are good for the life of the vehicle and hopefully yours will be in good shape. The upper ball joint however is a known problem due to the constant pounding that joint endures. About 100,000 mi. is the life expectancy.
