Well Im nearing the 5K mark and I need to change the oil. At the same time I might as well put oil in it thatll survive over winter. Keep in mind it gets freaking cold up here (down to -40's) Which oil should I use?
For those temps go with 5-20W. Roteela is good so it mystic. Mystic is cheaper, thats what I use along with some lucas and it works good. For those temps you might want to consider going with stenthic.
Yea I was planning on going with the Rotella T (synthetic??) that I saw at Wal-Mart this winter. I think it was 5w-20. I'm nearing an oil change, but if I don't put it in this time it'll be half way thorough winter before I need the oil changed again.
Is there any harm in putting that weight in before it gets really cold??
Rotella T Synthetic is 5w-40 is what I use it year round. I think a alternative to 15w-40 is 10w-30 in cold climates. Just make sure it has the diesel rating CH-4 or CI-4. CI-4 is the new specification and what is usually on the shelf.

Cat-
The only harm to putting a lighter weight oil in when it's still warm is that it can/will break down quicker than the heavier oil that you are used to. The lighter weight oil obviously has a lower vicosicity and in hotter temperatures won't protect the engine as well as the higher vicosicity oil, it will get running and won't stick to parts. When it's cold, it stays more vicosous (sp?) and will provide the same protection as the heavier oil in the warmer temperatures.
I wouldn't think it would cause any problems, just if you run it hard a lot, you might end up changing your oil sooner than with your regular weight oil. Just keep an eye on it.
I run 15w-40 all year round, I don't have any problem with it, might take a little long to get it warmed up, but I like have the heavy stuff in there.
Well, it could but PSD's dont have problems with oil leaks. Your truck is only seven years old all the gaskets and seals are going to be strong. Youll be fine. I have to really encourage Mystic it is really good and its the cheapest, I have seen the oil anlays results of mystic and it is among the best of dinos.
Synthetic doesnt weaken the seals. It just uncovers the leaks. Dino oil can plug a leak. Synthetic will not.
Personally I would recommend 5-40 mobil 1 full synthetic. With the discussion on oil shearing. I think this would be a better choice.
lightest diesel oil rated oil I have seen is 0W30 , 5 W20 are not diesel rated oils . diesel oil have to have hths number nore than 3.8 they usualy get closer to 4.1 and up . do not use 5w20 in this application
