My 1992 aerostar's shocks are beginning to wear out, I just had the fronts replaced a while back and they are worn out again. I also need tires. what are the best all around shocks???? and tires??? I do drive on poorly maintained backroads about half the way to work, and at 80 mph on the interstate the other half, so theese parts will wear quickly. What I want is something that isn't going to put a big hole in my wallet, will last a while, and wont sacrifice ride quality to do it. also, what can i do to get better handling at highway speeds without a load in the back, it sure handles better with the kids in the back, but i'd rather not have them with me all the time.
Monroe Sens-A-Track shocks work well.
Yokohoma AVID Touring, best tire for the money I've ever had. Approx. $42.00/ea from Tire Rack. Eventually wound up buying 3 sets for our other cars.
I have been using Monroe Sensatracs shocks on my 93 AWD here in Eastern Neb. The Monroes on front started leaking at 60 k miles and I replaced them free as they are life time. I have been running Good year Regatta tires. I have over 63K miles on them and they look only half worn or less. A lot of highway & interstate driving. Some steep hills & rutted gravel roads. Seem to work good on the snow & ice.
For tires I stick with Michelin on my '97 AWD, although friends have had great luck with the less expensive Yokohamas as mentioned above. I just have never had a problem with Michelins on many cars over many, many years.
As far as shocks, I have tried many national brands except Koni, Tokico and Bilstein and have come back to Ford replacements. I used the Sensatracs for a month and took them off as they were unstable at freeway speeds when my van was near fully loaded. It could have just been this set, and the ride unloaded was good, but driving under load was a scary proposition. The Reflex are great with weight in the back, but not as smooth when just me in the vehicle. Other Monroes, Gabriels fogetaboutit! Either mushy or rock hard. Also with the AWD, not every mfg. makes a front shock application.
For best Ford replacement prices I have found, check put these guys. These prices are for AWD, but I am sure similar savings on standard Aerostar.
AS-247 Genuine Ford front shock $ 33.99 ea.

I have always been a KYB fan and love the ones I put on my 93 AWD. Also, I highly recommned having a rear anti-sway bar installed. I think mine was about $100 from Addco(?), installation required some drilling and about 1.5 hours.
