I have a squeal behind the vibration damper. It does this even with S belt removed. The vibration damper looks good to me. Noise varies with engine speed. Vehicle in park. Any suggestions?
I wonder if the damper seal is causing the squeal? You might be able to pinpoint it by spraying WD40 at the seal and then see if the noise changes. The seal is quite easy to replace.
We also have Van and 4.2L engine forums a ways further down on the main forum page. You will probably find some good reading in both of those
Thanks for the response. I did lubricate that seal when I replace the same vibration damper. I think the squealing is coming from behind the timing chain cover. Could the chain tensioner be wore out. The engine has 155K miles on it?
I guess it's possible that the timing chain tensioner could cause the noise but I've never seen one do that.
I just thought of something else that can squeal....the synchronizer assembly. It's the piece that is where the distributor would be if it had one. It fits into the timing cover. The Cam Position Sensor sits on top of it and it drives the oil pump. I haven't seen these squeal on a 4.2 but have on a 3.8 and they are basically the same engine.
Thanks again for your hepl. I think you are right about that camshaft sensor drive shaft being the squeaker. I placed a hose on the sensor and listened to the hose and heard the squealing. Can I remove the sensor and squirt some oil down there to varify this? I probably need to remove the timing chain cover and replace a bearing, thats a big job.
I havent done one of these in ages but I seem to recall that the last one I saw that squeeked had to be replaced. You could pull it out and take a look though.
The synchro assembly comes out like an old distributor. There is just 1 bolt holding it in.
It does have to be lined up correctly when reinstalled though so make sure you mark the housing and where the "wheel" under the CMP sensor aims etc.
