help the new guy with TIRES

I registered so I could do some searches but couldn't find much info., sorry if this is beating a dead horse.

At 60k miles the Firestones are into the "Secondary Rubber" and about to start showing steel, or so the tire guys tell me. I need to know what tires are good and what size I should get.

The guys at Les Schwab always cheerily greet me (usually before I get my door all the way open) and have fixed more flats for me than I can count. I would like to buy from them if possible. The only tires they have in the stock size are Toyo Open Country A/Ts. Does anyone have any info on the Toyo's? I'm open to any suggestions. I "Googled" them and they seem to have mixed reviews for somewhat short treadlife. They are not a cheap tire so this kind of concerns me. This leads me to my next question:

The Firestones are 265 75 15s. According to www.toyo.com the Open Country A/Ts in this size have 13/32" of tread Diam= 30.7" Width= 10.3". The same tire in 31x10.5x15 has 16/32" tread Diam= 30.4, Width= 10.7. Another shop suggested that I go with the 31x1.5s, they seem to be about the same diameter and just under a half inch wider. Are there any problems with going to the different size. I don't understand the difference between the two sizing systems.

Any suggestions?? Bridgestone Dueler, Bridgestone Revo, BFG A/T, etc.????

This is for a work truck, I put on aprox 20k per year with a fair amount of off-road use. Not much mud but a lot of snow and general off-road stuff.

what are the size of your tires, what kind of truck are you running? I have a 94 ranger, and i run 225/70/14 Goodrich Radial T/A's, great tire, just my rearend likes to hop a bit and i have had these on for about 30k and it hasn't shown much wear at all except for the rear ones that have been burned a few times since i've moved to this new area.

The Toyo Open Country's are a good tires. Had those in 31x10.50 on my Ranger before. Did good in, well, everything really. I now run the Mud Terrain SXT (I think) from Les Schwab, in the same size. They're not quite a mud terrain, but more agressive than an all terrain. Been a good tire, they do awsome in snow/ice, sand, mud, deep water on the road, etc, also pinned for studs. Would definately recommend them and buy them again.

Any suggestions for a tire that does look more aggressive than that Mud Terrain SXT that will fit a 2001 EDGE? I would like more of a meaner look (yeah I know, it's still just a Ranger) since my current tires are the world's most boring, wussiest looking tires available. But hey, they had tons of tread left when I bought the truck at 14k miles...I guess they were free so I can't complain too much.

Just put a set of 31" Firehawks on my 4x4 Ranger to the tune of $500. Anxious for the snow to see how they do. They look pretty darn good though, somewhat aggressive but yet not too noisy on the highway.

With the liberators, just remember, you get what you pay for. As tempting as it is, i'd rather buy somthing more expensive just for the piece of mind. You can at least get some goodyears or somthing, some of those are pretty cheap. How bout the kumho venture a/t's check out www.tirerack.com and see what you can find.

I'm running these on my truck and I like them so far. The wear good, go anywhere, are 10-ply for puncture resistance, and they only cost me $425 for a set installed.

There are 3 outstanding tires being manufactored today (Fact not opinion!)
Bridgestone's REVO is prolly the best all around AT tire you could purchase. Then for extreem use the Firestone Destination MT would be the best choice. It has more plys and more puncture resistance than any other tire.
Then for a 3rd choice and also a truly aggressive tread is the new Goodyear Rubicon MT tire. All of the above tires should getcha 60/85K miles and should be at the top af anyones list for tires.

You seem pretty confident about there being three good tires. The Firestone Destination M/Ts have some good reviews on www.tirerack.com and are price pretty resonably. I'm a little surprised at the wide range of treadlife that people report on the same tire. For the most part they all seem to be about 40k mile tires, 60/85k seems a little optamistic.

My experience with M/Ts is that they were quickly if not rotated often and are noisy. I'd definatly like the extra traction but I'm not sure it's worth the trade-off.

Thanks for all the help, keep it coming. Oh, and this is a '98 Ranger used for land surveying.

Yokohama Avid S/T's. Low road noise and super grippy in the wet.

I used to be a big goodyear fanatic, then i got my paws on some Kelly-Springfields. Best tire I've ever had on any vehicle. I have a 99 Ranger 2wd and go from Kelly Chargers in the good weather months, to the Kelly Wintermarks in the winter. Between the two sets of four, I have about $600 in rubber, and will definitely drop another 600 when needed. Check into the Kellys.
