I decided to go with BFG A/Ts, I didn't encounter any snow or off-road terain on my way back from the tire store but so far so good.

The first thing I noticed as soon as I hit the driveway aproach leaving the store is that the A/Ts ride way smoother than the Firestones. The Firestones are like rocks compared to the BFGs. They are also quiet, no perceivable tire noise at 60mph. I'm looking forward to putting some miles on them and see how they handle different things.

I was resisting buying the BFGs for some reason. They are a very popular tire around here, I guess I just wanted to look at all the options.

Looking at the reviews on www.tirerack.com the BFGs seem well liked. If you skim through and read all the reviews with 20-30k miles or more (there are tons of reviews from people who have +/-1000 miles and see themselves as authorities on the tires) they seem to hold up well too, 50-60k seems about the norm. The Bridgestone Revos on the other hand seem to be a 30-40k mile tire with a few exceptions. The Toyo Open Country was pretty much the same story on www.1010tire.com (I don't like their website as well but tirerack doesn't sell Toyo).

It's not scientific research by any means but I fell good about it. I'll post another review at about 50k.

Thanks for the help guys.

Thanks guys...I have several now that I'd like to check out. At least now I have some idea what I'm looking for. I like the way the Mastercraft Courser MT's look, as well as the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R (couldn't find any pictures of those Rubicons you suggested). In any case, I now have some in mind.

I recently installed a set of Michelin LTX M/S's on my truck and really like them. They are quiet on the highway, offer great grip on gravel roads and apparently wear well.

Keeping a fleet of Rangers on the road, I have relied on Tire Rack for a long time without disappointment. For the most part, the o.e. tires seem to last 40 - 50k and most of the trucks have different drivers periodically which is an entire other issue. Most of the trucks that are sporting replacement tires have Kumho Venture. Other than an occasional nail hole, they are just great. Very smooth riding and they seem to consistently receive great reviews on Tire Rack - note all of the dark green.

We recently purchased 9 new Nissan Frontier trucks - ergh - which all have General Grabber Tires. Stand by for more information on how well these hold up.

For whatever it is worth

OlGreen, I have the BFG A/Ts on my truck and so far so good but havent had them in any mud or snow but they are pretty quiet and with 8,000 miles showing minimal wear. Now I do know that the Bridgestone Dueler M/Ts are a great tire for mud and snow...had some on a F350, and they wear great if you rotate them every 5,000-8,000 miles and Kuhmo Venturer M/Ts are about the same tire with a little less tread life...so either of those tires would be my suggestion since they are both pretty quiet on the road with outstanding snow performance and great in the mud...good luck with whatever you buy. Check ratings and reviews at tirerack.com.

Thumbs up

I've had Mich. LTX AT's (2 sets), Firestone AT's , Bridgestone Dueler AT's, BFG AT KO's, and Brigestone Dueler REVO AT's and by far the best were the REVO's!!!! They beat every other tire in every area and will never let you down. Yes, they ARE worth the money!!!
