4x2 Worth it?

i have a 96 F150 short bed reg cab 5.0 4x2 and was wondering if it is really worth keeping or should i trade it in for a 4x4. I do mostly trails and some moderate sand wheeling. if i keep it i was planning on putting a selectable locker in the rear along with a 12,000lb winch up front. i really like this truck as it is my first and it took me awhile to get it running good and i hate to let it go. i got a deal on it that i couldnt pass up but i like to go wheelin and was wondering if putting money into it is worth it. btw i plan to keep it for at least another 100k

i know how it feels about a first truck and if you are really heart-set on keeping it, it really isn't all that hard/expensive to make it a 4x4. i would do that esp if you like projects.

not really! if you take it in steps he will be fine. do the t-case first and spend all weekend on it he will have it running again by monday....and that's just to get the driveshafts re-worked. and the next weekend do the front axle which will take him prolly 10 hours depending on tools and help available and if he needs any extra parts.

If you want to stick to a newer vehicle, then keeping your current truck is a viable option because many of the newer light duty trucks rarely come with anything else other then automatic hubs or that ilk like vacuum hubs. At least if you make it a 4x4, you can add a manual transfer case and manual hubs without much expense. If cost is no object.

As for the truck being down, a rent-a-car can usually be had for $25 a day. Plan it into your budget.

Myself, I would find a 4x4 like I want to drive, buy it, fix it up like I want, then sell my 2x4 once it was fixed and running correctly. I would plan on selling the 2x4 in spring when demand would be the highest.

thats a crock. you just gotta keep your eyes open for good deals. i bought a t case for 75 bucks and a trans with 12k miles on it for 150, its all in how hard you look for the deals and how easily they fall in your lap. its definatly not going to be just 200 bucks, but it'll be worth it in the end and you can do it for way less than 2000. when you buy your front end, make sure it has the same gear ratio, unless you are planning on swapping 4.10s or 4.56's in it with a lift and bigger tires. where are you located at, i know a couple guys here with ttb front ends just sitting around and a t case too.

just a lil bit ;-) so what about just adding a locker in the rear, lift/tires, and a winch up front?

that would definatly make it more capable, its all in what your gonna do with the truck. if your gonna drive it around town and hit the occational mud hole, then a locker in the rear will do fine. but if you've got bigger plans then its definatly worth it to switch it over.

its mostly my DD but i do like to hit the trails every now and then, nothing major, just dirt, hills, and sand. i was thinking a selectable or full-time locker, gotta research that a little more, a 9k MM winch up front with a receiver hitch so i can use it in the back if i need to, 4" lift and some 33" BFG A/T
