injectors

I have an 1988 302 2 wheel drive F 150. I was doing some work on the truck and noticed the smell of gas. I have had a cold start problem for quite a while and was wondering how you go about determining a bad injectoer from a good injector. The engine has 170,ooo miles on it. I suspect an injector because of the gas smeell. I do not have a driveability problem in fact the truck drives great once it starts. If you do replace injectors what brand is the best to go with?

Pretty much any injector you get will be a Bosch injector, it may just be a matter of who rebuilt it. Ebay is probably the least expensive source for injectors. Five-O motorsports out of california is very reputable, and has very good quality injectors if you determine you need them. I would try to run some good injector cleaner through a tank of gas and see if that helps any. Have you tried pulling codes from the computer? I'd start with the codes and see what comes up there before you go replacing injectors.

Thanks for your reply. When it starts and it is always the first start of the day that it does this, it idles very fast for about 15 seconds and than it dies. It will do this three or four times. If I keep my foot on the accelerator and manage the idle myself it will run. When I shift into reverse it will act as if it is not getting gas and than it catches up and runs fine. I have checked codes in the past and I haven't had any in the past. Is there a procedure for trouble shooting injectors? I haven't noticed black smoke on start up or acceleration. I would think you begin by taking a look at the plugs and go from there.

I would check the fuel pressure regulator, Pull the vacuum hose off and see if there is gas in the line, If there is its time for replacement!

One thing I would try is cycle the key on and off several times before you crank it next time. If it starts right up, then your fuel pressure is leaking down over night. I'd check fuel pressure just to see what the readings are when the truck is running, then watch the pressure after you turn it off and see how long it takes to bleed down.

How dirty is the IAC(idle air control) valve. This could be the cause because it's really dirty...
