460 Identification

I just picked up a truck that is supposes to have a 460 in it, but what's in there looks to small to be a 460. I just read in another post that the id numbers are located above the starter so I'll have to crawl under there and locate them, but here is a couple of pics. Can anyone tell if it is a 460 from the pics?

sorry, thought I could attach a picture, but I guess I have to upload it to a website first. I'll have to figure that out.

In the mean time, are there any visual clues I could tell look at the top of the engine as it sits in the truck?

Ford V8's can be identified by the number of valve cover bolts. But that takes too long. I've come up with several checks that allow one to literally run through a junk yard identifying engines.

Check the outer row of head bolts. If they are "below" the exhaust (like a small block Chevy), then the engine is a 302 or 351W.

To tell a 302 from a 351W, check the level of the head gaskets. If the block could possibly have been decked closer to the water pump and timing cover, then it is a 351W.

Check the valve cover edges. If the edges of the steel stamping curl back up like a J, then it is a 351M or 400 (or a 351C).

To tell a 351C from a 351M or 400, check the block extension that covers the timing gears. If one corner has a big 45 degree angle, then it is a 351C. In other words, the taller deck of the 351M and 400 allow this part of the block to be more squared off.

Check the ends of the heads for the ends of the intake manifold gaskets. If the seam meets the valve cover, then it is an FE. In other words, FE valve covers span from the head to the intake. If you know what you are looking for, you can also identify an FE by the exhaust ports. They are angled like this: \ \ / /.
