I am getting an ABS light randomly during driving. Is the speed sensor usually the problem or can the wheel sensors go bad also? If the speed sensor goes bad does that cause problems with the transmission shifting?
Yes, we've had wheel speed sensors go out at this dealership and sometimes they've caused all sorts of bucking, tranny shifting, speedo wacky etc problems. Most of the time this doesn't happen but in a rare case it can.
Where can you get these for $10? I just called the ford dealer near me, and they quoted me $20.86 for one.
Same for me. I paid $26 for mine. Asked for a discount and didn't get one. Left satisfied anyway. Just put the new sensor in in under 15 minutes (including putting the tools away) and am leaving to spend the difference between my $26 sensor and the $150 (?) and a day without my ride it would have cost me. Thanks to all the Ford alumni out there willing to share their information.

Great thread! Glad I can save some $$ by a simple DIY fix. I just went outside and crawled under the rear end to see the sensor as iceman explained. One question. What exactly do I ask for at the parts store -- it has been referred to as speed sensor, differential sensor, ABS sensor, etc.
"What exactly do I ask for at the parts store -- it has been referred to as speed sensor, differential sensor, ABS sensor, etc"
I asked for, "The speed sensor on the rear differential..." and the parts guy interrupted me and said, "no problem." I asked, "is this a common failure?" (Knowing of course that it is because of this awesome forum) and he said, "well, it's used on every heavy duty truck Ford makes."
$26 and a tube of dielectric and I was out the door.
you can go under the truck one time if you take a 3/8" socket, ratchet, your new part, a flashlight, your dielectric grease, and a rag.
ABS light on all the time. Took to shop (not dealer) who reported the code suggested the ABS computer is bad. Iv'e read posts suggesting ABS light often caused by rear wheel sensor. Should I attempt computer replacement? Its expensive ($800 at dealer) and I'm note sure I can do it myself. Any input is welcome. Thanks.
Welcome to the only family Ford Truck site, on the net. The members in this forum are very knowledgeable about these trucks; they will eagerly help you…with your question.

I see this is an issue...My ABS light comes on and things go nuts. My speedo goes crazy, and My truck surges and sputters (f250 V10) Is this the same problem? HELP!!!!! it's driving me crazy.
My ABS light came on in my 2000 Navigator the other day. Read this post. Bought the part at the dealer for $22 and changed it in less than 15 min. Problem solved.
Many thanks to all who take the time to provide input to this site.
