92 F-150 302 EFI E4OD Tranny

On my 92 F-150 that has the E4od, going up the hill my truck will buck and the rpm's on the truck will jump up and down. I know for sure it's the torque converter clutch because it shudders pretty bad at highway speeds, will some anti-shudder lube work good? I already replaced the mlps sensor didn't do anything but kinda smooth out the shifts wow!!! Surely a vss sensor couldn't cause that? When it does this on my truck the overdrive light doesn't flash at all, so does that mean it's the engine causing it to this, I am still thinking it's the transmission for sure though.... HELP!!!

First off, never, NEVER, NEVER put additives in a Ford tranny. Trust me I blew one myself with the anti-shudder additive garbage.

Sounds like it could be the torque converter clutch, but not for sure - when my TCC when bad on my Tbird it would shudder then lock up really hard and stay locked.

I've had some bucking problems with my 88 F150 5.0 and it had to do with spark plug wire routing, there is actually a certain way the wires need to be routed so they don't crossfire! Seriously, I re-routed the wires and the problem was gone. Have had bucking symptoms before that simply needed new plug wires because of misfiring and cross firing.

Just a couple ideas that are cheaper than a tranny/torque converter...

Hey Steve, do you have a messenger that we could talk on, how would I route the wires to get rid of the crossfire possibly?

Sorry, no messenger currently. I don't have the sheet with the routing with me anymore. My mechanic printed it off for me a few months ago. A decent Ford dealer should be aware of the problem and be able to give you a diagram. I'll see if I can get another copy from my mechanic...

I think the info is on this TSB: 94410 FEB 94 Spark Plug Wire - Miss/Buck/Spark Knock

Here is some more interesting info on the subject: https://www.ford-trucks.com/archives...2000.I254.html

I would appreciate it Steve alot if you could do that, so you are telling me that the bucking going up a hill being that the truck is under a load going up the hill could be due to a plug wire being crossfired? Wow never thought of that, I would love to find that diagram on the internet maybe in the forums here...

Thanks Steve,
Jason

See my editing in post above, I found more info. Ford even had a TSB (Techinical Service Bulletin) on this problem. Haven't found a diagram on the Internet yet, but will keep looking. Basically it looks like #5 and #6 are the problem cylinders.

I should also mention that my pickup did NOT ping when it bucked due to the wrong routing of plug wires, it just chugged like it was running on 4 cylinders.

Have you changed cap and rotor? I've fixed bucking problems on a few vehicles with that - rust on cap terminals or corroded rotor and tangs under the cap where the spark jumps.

wow, Steve I routed the wires differently and the truck doesn't buck no more, at least I can't tell it, I drove the truck probably around 85mph and no hesistation whatsoever. What kind of plug wires would you suggest me to get when I do a tuneup next???

Thanks for your help man, wow something that simple LOL!!!,
Jason

Jrock, either get the motorcraft from the dealer, or go to napa and get teh $65 set. They are good wires, it's all we use on our fords around here.

It's amazing how many simple things can really mess up the driveability of a vehicle! I'm with pfogle - get the good wires. I think I put a $25 set on the first time, about 5 months later they were grounding out and cross firing. Put on the good set for around $60 and haven't had another problem. Go with the 8mm instead of 7mm I feel that they last longer...
