Hi, I am planning to have the rear coil springs replaced. I have a 4.0 L 1990 aerostar extended box. I use my van to tow my boat and the back of the van seems too low because of the weight. Last year I replaced the rear shock(I thought the shock are bad) and it did not help. I learn from this forum that soneone had used air shock and I might try it. However,I would like to know if is better just to replace the coil springs with heavy duty ones. How are those coil springs rated? Is it an easy task to changed them myself? Thanks.
I think (but am not sure) that the Cargo version had heavier springs. I also can't say for sure, but the spring changeout can't be more than a couple of hours, shouldn't be too bad.
I woudl be curious if someone could confirm the cargo spring deal.
I just put a set in our van any good parts store should have them available. If they do not have Moog try TRW Schucks,Auto zone both had them I got them at Baxters in port Ore.they had them avail faster. Van sits a little higher in back now looks much better and handles better.
How about that, I'm in Portland as well and shop at Baxter's quite a bit. Do you mind telling me what the cost was? Also, do you have an extended or regular length? I have both in AWD versions and am setting the short one up for towing. However, it's the extended that really seem to sag from all that extra weight on the butt end.
I just replaced the coil springs on my 87 2wd aerostar with a variable rate spring from Auto Zone. The two springs cost me about $65.00 as a set. The springs had 11 coils instead of 9. My van sets up higher in the rear now. I also replaced the top insulators at the same time which I had to by from ford. They cost me $21.00 for the two. I also put Gabriel Gas Shocks on the van. Working on replaceing the front springs tonight with Variable rate (if it will stop raining) The rear springs and shocks made a Huge differance with loads. Van also rides ALOT better.
