Hello,
I am new to the forum and I need help finding some rear springs for my Aerostar. I own a 1997 Extended AWD Aerostar. The Van has 90,000 mile on it and the rear end is about 1.5-2" lower than it should be. I have recently replaced the rear shocks, but now I need to do the springs. I searched the forums and found that some have used Moog Cargo Coils.
I went to my local parts place to buy a pair of Moog Cargo Coils for the van but the parts catalog does not list any for a 1997 AWD. They list Moog CC841 for all '90-'97 exept AWD
and CC845 for all '90-'96 AWD.
The spring code on the Van's I.D. label is WE. The label on the springs themselves has the following markings: EB, 15.12/1900, and F19A-5534-EB.
Has anyone else with a 1997 EXT. AWD replaced their rear springs? What did you use? Will one of the above Moog parts work?

There is a listing for both 2WD and 4WD
2WD McQuay-Norris, set of 2 rear coils, part # RCS841V $77.99
or for the 4WD version: TRW, set of 2, part # CC845, $72.29
Please let me know what you think of those springs. I was thinking about using the same ones on my '95 4WD Aerostar, but haven't had the time to do anything yet.
Well,
I finally installed the Moog CC845 coil springs in the rear of my van. The springs are great. The van ride is very good and the rear height has been restored. I definitely recommend the springs.
Yes my 4wd 97 Aerostar has buttt sag as well. I have towed with it and it really drags. Just went out and ordered Monroe air shocks. My van had butt sag from day one. I've noticed many other 4wd Aeorstars with the same condition. Any idea why???
Good content in the above replies. As such I am planning on replacing my OEM rear coil springs before winter hits in MN.
I checked with Autozone in my neighborhood and they have Perfect Circle "VARIABLE" rate rear springs for around 63.00. I also called Checker Auto Parts and they have the McQuay-Norris RCS845V for about 70.00.
The question I have is, "do I want to buy or NOT buy the VARIABLE rate rear springs?" I would think they would be better than straight rate springs, BUT I have heard varying opinions on the issue and would welcome more from this collective group before deciding on the purchase.
Secondly, regarding the R&R of the rear coil springs, do you guys have any tips on making the job easier or faster and are there any additional parts that will need to be replaced as well?
variable rate tend to make the best of both worlds, with a smoother ride on the small bumps, but still having the heavy dampening when you need it. If you tow a lot though, I would think that stiff regular springs would be best.
I will be helping my uncle replace the springs & shocks on his 94 AWD Aerostar as well.
I would also like to know what / if anything else should be replaced while we are down there. It has 130K on it, if that helps.
Any suggestions?
Also, any other suggestions when performing the install, like things to look out for, or is it pretty self explanatory? I have replaced the struts /springs on my mr2, and 3000GT, but will it be harder on the Aerostar?
deviousz,
I replaced the rear springs on my '91 4.0 AWD extended (130k)a couple of months ago. The upper mount bolts were frozen in pretty tight. I had sprayed them a week before hoping it would soak in by the time I started the job. If you get under the van and look up in the frame, there is a small gap where you can get to the top of the mount and spray some lube on the exposed ends of the bolts. I originally thought the bolts went right through the floor of the vehicle, but this is not the case. Anyway, one of the bolts came out after a bit of heating with a torch, the other completely rounded the head,so I wound up using a dremal cutter to remove the head, then with the spring out of the way I was able to get in there with vice grips (and the torch) and turn out the rest of the threads. The bottom mount bolts, hanging down there in all the road crud all these years came right out with no problem,go figure....
Good luck!
