What is a HEI coil? i was in my auto class today, and one of the students asked if out teacher had one. I'm drawing a mind blank and can't remember what it is? or what it's used for.... can u just reply with the answer...thanx. it's been drivin me nuts!!

 

High Energy Ignition - a term used in a number of automotive ignitions, but most typically found on late 1970's and early 1980's General Motors cars and trucks.

The coil is designed to sit right on top of the distributor cap of six and eight cylinder engines. Check out SUmmit Racing for aftermarket versions.

It really wasn't that great of a design, though in theory it could have been great I suppose.
