i have never done a rebuild before but i have a 302 and a 351-w in the back yard. first question is which one would be best to build? i want as much power from it as possible , a friend of mine told me to build the 302 but put the 351 heads on it. would something like that be better? what do i ask the machine shop to do to the heads? any info would be great !
Well most heads after early 1970 were identical on the two motors, so unless its a 1969-74 351w putting the heads on the 302 wouldn't really benefit you in any way.
What year are the two blocks? If the intake is off the two engines, take mirror and look under the intake ports on the heads (in the lifter valley) you should see something that begines with a D or E with three other characters. What are they?
Tell the machine shop to go over them and check for unnecessary wear and install new seals, check the heads for cracks, if your looking for more power then ask for a three angle valve job and mild port work, have springs installed that compliment the camshaft you plan on running....you will have to plan on spending $4-500 though.
Go with the 351w..... more cubes is better any day, especially in a truck application.
One of the comp cam extreme energy cams should make you happy, one in the 250-268 range, range goes from low end torque to mid range hp, call comp and give them your combo, tranny , axle ratio(s) and they will tell you which one is the best for you...too easy huh?...the # is 1 800 999 0853 for the cam help tech line.
They will tell you that the 268 doesn't require a higher stall but in reality, it wouldn't hurt and your truck may wanna lunge a little when your at a stop light with the stock converter. Good luck
