Question Thoughts on Ford HEI distibutor?

I was told by a friend that it was possible to get a Ford distributor setup like GM's HEI ignition. After a little searching I found this page which just such products, http://www.performancedistributors.com/forddui.htm Does anyone have an opinion on using one of these, I think it would be more convenient to have all of the ignition all together(I think that's the only thing GM did I've ever agreed with). However, I am not familiar with this particular product or company. Thanks for your help!

I have been very happy with mine... Works very well.

I purchased a nice quality unit (Austrailian made) HERE. Their current price is only $119.95. The company is very dependable, and ships quickly...

EDIT: The complete Ford listing page is HERE... They also have big-block units for the same $$

Well I went with a homemade version of the hei and I think it was an improvement over the stock duraspark II. Most everyone that tries it likes it, so I can see no reason as to why and actual hei distributor wouldn't perform the same. Can't beat the one wire hook up.

If you have a duraspark II distributor now, I can tell you how to set up an hei ignition using a gm module and ford tfi coil, including connectors and new parts it cost me about $40 not including the distributor.

Good luck

The E-coil makes a good addition to the duraspark system but the Duraspark system has a start timing retard function built in that cuts down on cranking effort.

The DUI is very $$$ but there are alternatives that are marketed by various dealers. AFAIK they all work well. There are some other suppliers but it seems that mad dog racing and fast engine parts are having some server or domain name problems at the moment.

I've been looking hard at that aussie dizzy. I think it would be a easy 2 wire hookup to the msd 6 ignition system wouldn't it?

I think you posted that before...one of the improvements over the duraspak II , in my application, was cold starts....while the duraspak II may have the function to cut down cranking effort...with the gm module/tfi coil...my truck starts twice as fast... I was skeptical but obviously now I am sold on the idea. Who knows?

I'm not sure about the MSD system, but it sure was an easy 1 wire installation for me...

EDIT: As far as cold-starting goes, my truck fires-up with a bump of the switch.

The reason Ford uses the start retard function is that it reduces cranking amps and stress on the starter. Of course if you have a bad ignition module, weak coil, bad starter relay, bad ignition switch, or bad wiring, any new system or repairs will be an improvement. Many people change out ignition systems or modules and get better results because along the way they fixed a problem with new wiring, re-plugged in a bad connector, replaced a component, etc. It happens all the time.

I would say your right, in general. In my case I replaced the entire ignition with new and reman components, after I just couldn't live with the oem duraspark II setup, didn't start to my satisfaction, made sure there was the correct amount of voltage at each component of the ignition system...IMO...it still sucked. I used the same power wire to run the homemade hei that I used to run the duraspark II...instant difference. Who knows?

Just some additional info....

I looked over the specs on the HEI distributor that I have, (linked above) and saw that it has a hardened steel drive gear. I became concerned since I am running a CompCams iron camshaft.

I made a quick call to Fast Engine Parts to find out that the grade of steel used is compatible with both roller and non-roller cams.

It is nice to know that I am not in danger of wearing-out my cam gear....

I love my Mallory GM-style HEI distributor for my 351W...I think it one of the best upgrades I did to the motor. Motor hardly has to crank at all, plenty of power going to the plugs...and not a lot of ppl around here have it so I get a bunch of questions about it.
