I would like to replace my fuel filter for 1990 4.0 engine. I had purchased a set of tools which I had used to diconnect air condition line. Can someone tell me if the same tools can be used to disconnect the fuel lime and what else should I watch out when changing the fuel filter. I had a code 41. And other question is does this engine use a EGR valve? Thanks.
I only used a pliers on my '96 4.0. The filter was roughly under the drivers seat. I left the van sit a few hours so the exhaust was cold, and rolled under the van and disconnected/reconnected it by hand. Haynes manual made it look like a big deal, but it wasn't at all. There was no pressure in the line, lost about 1.4 cup of gasoline. Took 5 minutes.
I always remove the fuel cap on any vehicle and wear safety chemical googles. If you have the type with plastic clips it is pretty easy. If you have the snap on connectors like mine you really need the X type tool. It is about $10.
You have to push it all the way in until it clicks. If you try to force the line you cause repair problems and fixing them can be a real hassle. I know, I have fixed them in the past for people that tried to blunder their way through by forcing the line back in.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Jul-02 AT 05:20 PM (EST)]I replaced my fuel filter the other day. it is with the plastic clip type. I did release the pressure at the fuel rail valve but there is not a lot of pressure. May be I had a leak. I mean the pressure is not holding. Well it is pretty easy actually. I did not realize that the new fuel filter comes with 2 new plastic clips and I had used the old ones. I will replace them as soon as possible. After filter changed, I still get a code 41 after driving for 15 minutes. Sometimes the idling fluctuate to a point so slow that make the van jerk. I notice that after the check engine light comes on, the van seems runs better. Code 41 means O2 lean. Will the O2 sensors be the problem? Any ideas will be appreciated.
