I was reading a detroit news article regarding the 2006 Explorer. In the article they state..."Under the hood, Ford plans to update the Explorer's engine family". Does anyone know what engines are being planned? DOHC? Three valves per cylinder?
I doubt Ford will make radical changes to the Explorer. The X is kinda like the F-150, its one of Ford's money makers. When you create the SUV market, you don't want to screw up your bread and butter. I would expect lower bumpers (to meet Federal regs), but nothing too dramatic. I guess we'll find out though. From the pics, it looks pretty good so far.
I have heard that if anyone wants a 2006 car (any car) that you will want to get an extended warranty, due to the fact that all the cats will be integrated, and not be able to be replaced as a component. Just what I heard.
Anonymous writes "The new V8 engine in the 2006 Explorer will be a variation of the new Mustang 3V 4.6L and will have over 290hp if not 300hp. The new Mustang engine has apparently been underrated by Ford in it's flywheel hp numbers. It will also be an industry leader with an all new 6 speed auto transmission. I don't follow this site closely so this may be old news. I have already been in and around the vehicle as I have very close ties at Ford but I really don't want to get anyone fired. Just look at the Expedition, both inside and out, and you will have an idea of the 2006 Explorer."
I got this from a forum. I'm not 100% sure if it's true, but it sounds like it's badass!!! Especially with the first 6-speed in an SUV.
They don't put the emblems on the "masked" prototypes, they don't want you to know who's it is. The bed is definately an oval, just poor picture quality.
