What would cause the motor to turn over slowly and not fire? I have replaced plugs, wires, starter, and battery. Engine still cranks real slow as if the battery is low or dead. All the battery cables are clean. Is there any sensors that I should check, or could it be out of time. If out of time, any suggestions as to what would cause a timing issue. Any suggestions would be helpful. This is driving me crazy!!!
Try bypassing the starter solenoid by jumping across both large terminals with two screwdrivers or pair of pliers. If the engine turns over at normal speed then either the starter solenoid is bad or the ignition switch is a fault. Next try to start the engine with the key and confirm it turns slowly as stated. Leave the key in the "ON" position, take a small jumper wire and jumper across the two small terminals on the solenoid and see if the starter turns normally. If so, the problem is the switch, if not, the problem is the solenoid itself.
Found problem to be a seized ac clutch that was dragging down the motor. I pulled off the serpentine belt and pulled the coil wire so the engine wouldn't run. Cranked it over and it cranked over at normal speed, not the slow dragging speed that I was experiencing when I was trying to start the van. I don't have the extra money right now to replace the ac clutch, so I was wondering if I bought a belt for the van w/o ac, would I be able to bypass the ac for a temporary fix? Thanks for all of your replies.
Yes, you can safely bypass the A/C with the shorter belt. Don't assume just the A/C clutch is bad, as the compressor may be low on oil and in it's death throes, which in turn caused the clutch to overheat and sieze.
Thanks Aero. Put on shorter belt, and the van fired right up with no problem. Clutch and compressor are seized solid to the point I can't get it to budge. I guess it's time to start saving pennies so that I can buy a replacement. Thanks again!!!
