Its time to replace the original battery in my 02 Explorer XLT V-6. The current battery is a Motorcraft (650 cold cranking amps). I am looking for suggestions on what brand and what capacity battery I should replace the stocker with (I would not mind something a little more heavy duty). Any ideas/suggestions please ??
Your stock battery should be Motorcraft BXT-65-650, and they also make a BXT-65-750, and BXT-65-850, all in the same 65 series size, just more amperage. At my dealership they are all the same price, 79.95. They come with a 3 year free replacement and I think 84 months prorated.
I have bought many different brands over the years, both cheap and expensive. I have had both types last 10 years, and both cheap and expensive last only 3 years. I see no pattern between brands or price.
I do like the duralast from autozone. Why? Because I like the built-in handle on the battery. The duralast is a good example of the random longevity of batteries. I have had one with the conventional top posts for about 10 years now. It has been in several cars, and is now in my 65 mustang. I just bought a used honda accord about a year ago. The guy saved all his receipts, including the new duralast battery that was about 2 years old. I had the car about 8 months, and the battery went bad. I took it to autozone with his receipt, and they gave me $25.00 toward a new battery. It had a 24 month free replacment, and a 7 year pro-rated warrenty. The new battery was $49.00 so the warrenty paid for about half of the new battery.
Luck of the draw like others have said. Ive had Motorcraft batteries come in 8-10 years old, and Ive had them come off the truck bad. I would say average is 5 years. Most folks wont have thier cars long enough to see a second one go bad, honestly.
I don't know if you can find it on the web, but I have read there are only 3 major manufacturers of automotive batteries. I believe they were Johnson Controls, Exide, and I forget the other. It was said all the different brands of batteries come from these three places.
