Hello fellow forum members,
I just had the DPFE sensor replaced on my 2000 Ranger, 3.0L, 4X4 with less than 20K miles at a cost of $183.99 by the dealer. I am trying to receive a warranty reimbursement.
How many of you have had this sensor replaced at low mileage?
State your model year, date of replacement and mileage at the date of replacement.
All replies greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Carl
DPFE failure is a very common problem on the 3.0L. You should get more than a few responses.
Remind your warranty company that the DPFE is a critical emissions-related component. It exists because federal and state laws and regulations require it. Federal law even says a car manufacturer must replace it free within 2 years of purchase even if no other warranty of any kind was given on the vehicle. So it ain't like your asking to be reimbursed for something trivial.
I think the emission system warrenty is longer; back in the 80's it was 5 years/50,000 miles on passenger cars. With this in mind, the repair would be on Fords checkbook, not your extended warrenty.

Bill, you might be thinking about the 8yr/80K federal emissions coverage, but that only covers the cats and the PCM.
A very good summary of the federal emssions warranty coverage can be found here:
2000 Ranger Supercab XLT 4X4 3.0L replaced DPFE at 53K. Old one was made of aluminum. New one is made of plastic. Installed it myself. Part cost was $76 and only took about 15 minutes to change out. I saved a lot of money by doing it myself with the help of this forum.
My DPFE was $51.88 at Advance Auto. And that was for a 99 3.0. Inflation since June hasn't been that much. Moral of the story: Don't visit your dealer unless you're buying a whole truck.
I replaced mine 2 weeks ago @ 51K for $47 plus tax. Hoped it would stop my pinging but it didn`t. Next step, I guess I`ll pull the EGR valve and clean it. I did throw in some higher octane gas and the pinging went away and I picked up one and a half miles per gallon!! `98 Mazda 3.0L Auto, limited slip.
For those who bought the sensor - how did you reference it at the parts store?
I went over to the Regional NAPA distribution store and asked for a DPFE sensor and was told after some computer searching that no such part exists. Is it an uncommon sensor or is NAPA just going into the toilet lately?
