I did the switch on my 1995 Aerostar and it was easy. Going by memory, remove the shrouds on the column, turn the key to the on position, push a little button, slide the switch out, slide the new one in, reverse the procedure. You might have one wire to disconnect.
I have done dozens, works basically the same on all the newer Fords. The only hang up is when you have to remove the shrouds on some vehicles which require you to drop the steering wheel slightly (two bolts) to remove the shroud.
Whatever you do, do NOT force the shroud or else you will crack it and it will never fit correctly again. On the Aerostar I think there is a little foam gasket that goes at the end of the shroud to seal the speedo base that you have to put back.
You also have to get the correct "base type" identified by the depth on one of the plungers. Then you take the key they gave you and your old key and they grind the door lock pattern on the new key.
Also, while you're in there examine you shift tube (around the shaft) for cracking. The newer version is a lot heavier. If this breaks you'll basically not be able to shift the transmission.
Jeff I recently replaced the ignition key cylinder on my 94. I opted for a replacement from Autozone for 15.00 because it had gotten so bad I didn't want wait to get to the dealer for a Ford part. I now have a different key for the door and ignition. My key was actually going in crooked and was hanging up. There are five different base keys. You match the key then have the door part cut to match your old key. Ford sells a replacement cylinder for about 50.00 and Advance auto sells an after market part for about 35.00 that can be matched to your old key. I replaced my cylinder without having to remove the shroud. Also my manual says that to replace the actual ignition switch, the part that the cylinder fits in, you should bring it to the dealer however Autozone does list a part number for the switch. Good luck!!!
