93 F150 ignition actuator

Had to replace ignition cylinder. After installation, key will turn and start engine normally but will not turn far enough to lock position to remove key. Removed both lock cylinder and ignition switch to see actuator lines up in run position with index mark on steering column. Actuator can be moved to start position but still will not move the other direction enough to be in the lock position. Is this a problem then with either the upper or lower actuator pieces needing a steering column tear down?

Never looked into the details, but I had a problem in a 94 F250 when I tried changing the lock cylinder. Turned out I had a used cylinder from a tilt column, possibly wrong year as well. I recall it sort of worked, but with much the same problems you describe. When I sourced the correct cylinder for my non tilt column, all was well.

I had to deal with worn lower actuator for a few months until i had the time to deal with replacement so i got a technique down; keep a small round tool in the door side pouch I used a precision phillips screwdriver which fit perfect, but anything that fits the hole will work; when you have a problem; use it to remove the cylinder;- it must be in the lock position to remove; then with cylinder out, use same tool inserted through the hole to reach a tooth on the lower actuator -you can then move it one way or the other depending on what you need. you will notice on the cylinder the gear is brass; the lower acuator is aluminum and the teeth wear out especially when someone habitually cranks the key too hard; and they are expensive $72.00 last time I checked. (I lucked out at the recycle yard tearing into a similar year bronco; the previous owner probably paid a lot of money for a repair as the rack was practically new. Its not uncommon for the older trucks to have the rack worn out I replaced the one on my 89 f250; but the one in my 91 f150 still works good probably because I am the second owner. You can also fiddle with the ignition switch adjustment located at the lower part of the steering column near the firewall; there is some adjustment but its a very tedious process to get that just right, so don't touch it unless absolutely necessary. hope that helps; Photo shows worn in back new (from recycle yard) in front.
