Lightbulb I Need An Explanation

Hello guys, After 2 months of looking at threads about gear ratios and TTBs im am majorly confused. My truck as all you know is a 1995 F250. I have raise it and run 39" tires. I hear you guys say TTBs suck with big tires. I havent yet had my truck out mudding and im am a little bit worried about tierods and ujoints flying, but my truck takes off from a stop on pavement absoutly excellent. There is no pause -it just goes. I also hear alot of talk about gear ratios and i really dont know how to tell what kind of axles i have front or back. My alignment is still slightly off and thats because no mechanic wants to touch it because of the size of it. I think they are scared . If i got it right my best option is to junk the TTB and replace it with a older straight axle type 4x4 drive axle. Is this right? What do I do with the drop down arms? How do i know what kind of gearing im running now? I was a mechanic myself for some years but you guys probably forgot more then most of these mechanics know today!!!!! You all have been a huge help in the building of my truck and i want to express my graditude.Thank each and every one of you guys for all your help, Tim

More than likely you have a 10.25 sterling in the rear and a d50 ttb up front. Most 250 I have seen came with 3.54 gearing but you should check yourself. Look for a tag on the axles. The strait axle is a good improvement. You will have to get the radius arms off the strait axle then I think it should work.

Don't worry about it. Just run it and have fun with it. Depending on your driving style and use you could be fine. When/if you have major carnage look at swapping in the 60 then.

i agree with pro, the best time to fix something is after you break it. run it till you break it, because the ttb might last and if it does the d60 would just be a waste of cash. the only way to find out though is to break the ttb first, if you break it, upgrade. breaking stuff is fun when youve got the money to replace it with better.

But I always say be on the lookout for good deals on upgrade parts in the meantime and grab them when you can. Nothing sucks worse than having something break and having to pay high $$ for parts because you need them right away. I've got a whole garage full of junk just waiting for an excuse to go on my truck.

I have 39.5 super swampers on my truck with ttb and have no problems yet. my mechanic does require me to put on tires that are no larger than 33 inches to allign the truck, but he gets it perfect every time. the allignment always lasts untill the next upgrade (usually about 14 months) with out a problem. I am not exactly easy on the worked 351w either when I get offroad. Once I come accross a good deal on a straight front axle I wont pass it up though, I am just not in a hurry. (I love projects) About the gearing in your 95 f250, my dad has a 94 f250 with a D50 and 4.11 gears in it. It says it right on a sticker on the front axle. Iam sure it says it right on the door sticker in code form as well.

I have beaten the snot out of a couple of TTB Broncos and they held up just as well as a D44 straight axle- only problem I would say is they can very easily eat tires if the alignment is off very much

the general consencus of the ttb is it eats tires (as stated above) because of negative caster and positive camber. here is an article that explains a lot about the ttb. http://fourwheeler.com/shop4parts/129_0305_ford/
scroll all the way down, its the last part of the article.
