Am I reading my owner's manual correctly when it says the 6.8L V10 in my 2002 Excursion only requires (6) Quarts of Engine Oil?? I had an Expedition previously and my dealer swore it required (7) quarts and it only had the 4.6 L V8.
Seems like such a large powerplant would need much more than (6) quarts, especially with the engine oil cooler?!
Monsta, if the X is stock, mine being a 2002 with V10, the manual says 6 quarts, and I have changed mine twice now and both time, 6 quarts brought it at the full mark.
Isn't the manual, based upon stock configuration including the oil cooler, etc and providing the 6 quarts as the requirement?
Maybe I missed a mod somewhere?
Reason I am stressing this is because both times, when I changed the oil, it took a long time for the oil to come up to the full mark. Had to run it a little, then give it about 15 or 20 minutes to settle....and this is even with 5W20 Motorcraft Semi-Synthetic that is recommended.
Have checked a couple times since my last change over a couple weeks, and still on the full mark.
Assume that when draining the pan and changing the filter, that the cooler is not drained, so it will always hold the difference?
This discussion's been had before. The oil level in the pan is 'full' at 6 qts. That is about halfway up the hash marked area on the stick. If it makes you feel better to add an extra half quart to cover all the hash marks, have at it.

You got my curious now with your response. I haven't seen any previous posts on this subject.
So you are telling me that the full mark is in the middle of the hash marks? Why would Ford do this? Not that I am unwilling to change or be flexible in life, but when did some engineer decide to make the full mark in the half way point whereas all other automobiles (at least that I have ever had) have the full mark at the top line?
I also haven't seen anything in the manual about this, but did read something about not adding any oil if the mark is in the hash marks, so that made me wonder why..........
Decided to go back an browse the manual to see if I missed something that was a clue to this mystery.... Here is what it says:
6. Wipe the indicator clean. Insert the indicator fully, then remove it again.
If the oil level is between the MIN and MAX marks, the oil level is acceptable. DO NOT ADD OIL.
If the oil level is below the MIN mark, add enough oil to raise the level within the MIN-MAX range.
So, this tells me it is ok to add oil to the upper mark, but yet confuses the issue by telling us "DO NOT ADD OIL" if it is between the marks?

I think it is a CYA thing. If it is between the hash marks you must take care to not overfill it. Guess Ford doesn't trust people to measure properly. Good move to me.
I also don't understand the reason for the dipstick not accurately measuring the specified 6 quarts to the top of hash marks. This goes against all other vehicle dipsticks I've ever owned. I'm not sure what level the 'min' end of the stick is.
I do know that I add a full six quarts of Mobil 1 5w-30 every oil change that brings the level up to the mid point on the stick, and don't use an appreciable amount of oil between changes. I may be a__l about a lot of things, but adding a half quart over the specified amount of oil to the crankcase just so the level is at the top mark on the stick, isn't one of them. That half quart isn't going to lower your oil temp or lubricate any better. I just made a mental adjustment that 'full' is at the mid point on the stick.
That half quart equals a free oil change every twelfth. At 4.00 a quart, that's ok.
I'm with ya! I just wanted to make sure my refills were right on the full mark to make it easier to track the consumption to make sure I didn't have any problems. I have put about 4000 miles on since I have had it, so it hasn' t been long enough to determine what is really going on. Next change, will do 6 quarts and leave it at that. Will adjust the mental note on half is full! Wasn't adding it to worry about temp, or lubrication...actually heard that the V10 get's better fuel mileage when the oil is on the lower side due to the crank not splashing so hard into the oil as much, yet the lubrication is plenty sufficient. I personnally don't worry about that slight of detail.
When towing a load in hot summer, I make sure that I have the oil at the full mark to ensure that I don't get low on the trip. One less headache to worry about.
