ok,here goes. I have 1960 f100 that had a 351w engine. I'm putting in a 1988 302,5.0 engine that is fuel injected. I want to change it to carb. I have an intake and carb to change it over. My question is:Can this really be as simply as changing the distributor and the intake? Any comments or suggestions? Also, there is no power steering on 60 truck, but I also picked up a gear box, but I'm unsure of the year. It looks as if it will work on my truck but I'm going to have to make a bracket to mount it on,my gear box sits at adifferent angle. Other than that it looks like it will work. Anyone tried this before? suggestions and comments greatly appreciated. thanks.
This issue has been discussed MANY, MANY times in various other forums on this wbsite - the 260/289/302/351 forum, the induction forum and I believe in the engine swap forum.
It's also been discussed on many of the mustang sites. There are some good tech articles about on a few of the more mainstream mustang forums as well.
I would have killed for your old 351W a year ago....
I do have to side with the first reply to your note though - why get rid of the EFI? Even I'm staying with EFI and I'm CERTAINLY not the most progressive guy around (yah, yah, Mr4spd - an old fart)
About the EFI.. isn't 88 before Mass Air Flow? If so, that means that if the cam, intake or exhaust deviate from the stock application for the computer, performance will be compromised. I don't know how much that REALLY matters in practice.
An aftermarket EFI brain would get around that, but would probably take some setting up.
Fuel line plumbing will be more complicated than a carbed truck.
Figuring out the EFI wiring harness will be fun, but plenty of other people have been down that path before, so it can be done.
why change the efi? Well. the gas tank needs another line for it(return),also i would have to install a whole fuel pump system, low and hi pressure pumps. Also, the wiring harness is another ballgame. Also, the sensors involved. I'd have to cut a hole in my header to put the o2 sensor in I think. I'm also having a problem with the power steering stuff. If I can't make the gear box work then Im gonna have to find a water pump that turns clockwise instead of counterclockwise. Sounds like a big mess. Anyone have 302thats carbed and want to trade for a efi 302? low mileage! just kidding, wish me luck and keep the suggestions coming...HELP!!!!!! Miami
Some useful hints about the wiring harness here: http://www.kaufmannproducts.com/faq.htm#wiring
Specifically: "The EFI wiring and engine computer is almost a stand alone system only needing a main power feed and a ground to work. You will need to wire the key on, the fuel pump, transmission, water temp., and check engine lite to your truck's wiring harness"
