I have had several problems with my brakes over the years and one that make diagnosing many problems difficult is the fact that my dash board Emer. Brake lamp is burned out. Is there an easy way to replace the light bulb without field stripping the dashboard? I've looked at it several years ago and didn't see any easy way.
Thanks,
David

The light may not be burned out. There is a high probability the parking brake switch is stuck closed. This is common on these vehicles. Pull off the rubber boot surrounding the park brake handle and find the small plunger switch and see if it moves up and down easily. Chances are it is full of grit and is siezed in the closed position.
While I haven't checked the switch, I'm pretty sure it can't be the culprit. When the van is started, the brake light does not come on like it should. Regardless of the position of that switch, it should come on when the van starts up I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong please.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Oct-02 AT 05:37 PM (EST)]Your are correct. The red BRAKE light is actually a two function light for both the parking and anti-lock warning lights. (Some error codes will cause both the red BRAKE and yellow ANTILOCK warning lights to come on simultaneously.) It should briefly illuminate on start up regardless of whether the parking switch is operational or not. If you have no visible BRAKE light on start up, then the light is either burned out, disconnected or has become loose and fallen out of the bulb socket.
As far as replacement, you will have to pull the pod cover as well as the metal dash cover that runs the length of the dashboard in order to disconnect the speedometer cable on the backside of the instrument panel. Not as bad as it sounds, but a stubby Phillips screwdriver or one of those special offset drivers is necessary to get the screws closest to the windshield.
