Question Crate Vs. Rebuild

Ok my 302 is dead. I have decided to go with a 351 in 92 Bronco can anyone tell me the pros and cons of Crate engine over a Rebuilt. Also with the swap is there any thing tricky that I might come across besides the EEC and wiring harness.

IMO the rebuild is a better way of going because you could see your block as it is being built and with a reputable engine builder you will learn more about your engine than you would with a crate engine. Also, with a crate engine you don't know what you'll get. The dyno sheets are often based off one engine and do not apply to every one that is built.

I plan on building a 351W SVO block with Edelbrocks MPFI manifold. All the benefits of EFI without the hassles of trying to get the right harness and other components.

i agree, go rebuilt. the harness will carry over , so will the accessory brackets. the ecu will need to be changed out with a 351/e4od ecu but only if your current tranny is an e4od. fill out your signature with info regarding your rig helps us help you.

Ford doesn't have much for a good 5.8L EFI crate motor at a reasonable price in their catalog, it's mostly 302 stuff.

I am in the same situation, swapping a 302 for 5.8 in my truck. There are lots of threads on the site as to what needs to be done for the swap, but I suggest rebuild..it's what I'm going to do.

I'm actually going to have the shop build me a short block (block, pistons, rods, crank, etc etc) all put together...and I'll put the heads, valvetrain and other stuff on it and install it.

If you can do most of the work yourself, and you know you already have a good core, than rebuilding can work out real well.

If you plan on dropping the motor off, then picking it up rebuilt. Not so sure there.

The warranty on the new crate motors is nice, you know exactly what you are getting into, and how much power it will make etc. Plus the Factory does durability testing on the crate engines, your builder does not.

Even if you rebuild the motor, think twice before rebuilding the heads. You could get some new GT-40P's for barely over the price of reworking the stock heads maybe even cheaper if they need new valves etc...
