My dad and I along with a couple of buddies have been doing alot of wild hog hunting. We have been using black mouth curs and pitts for our hog dogs. but I just heard about this dog called Plott Hounds. Some guy from Germany moved to the states back in 1700's and he bred these dogs to hunt wild hogs. It seems that this breed has gotten popular only I can't find where to get one. ANy suggestons?
Plotts have been used to coon hunt for years. They are Generally considered a "tree" dog which means they will trail something and then "tree" it. Stay at the tree and bark until you get there. They are not a real agressive dog.
My dad was a dog trader my whole life and I have hunted behind just about every kind of dog there is.
If a boar hunting dog is what you're looking for, you may care to check out the Dogo Argentino. A beautiful, powerful, hunting dog breed for large game. The dog has a look similar to an all white pitbull but it has very distinct roots, and characteristics. you can find the history of the breed here. Good Luck, hope this helps you out.
Plott hounds and Dogo Argentinos are not AKC breeds and so limited information about them is available there. I would get the number from 85bigblock. It's always good to speak with a breeder anyway. They can also point you in the right direction if they don't have any pups available.
I have to say that although Dogos are beatuiful looking dogs, they are not considered to be a safe breed just yet, they just aren't far enough from the dangerous breeds in their pedigree to have stable temperments. I am not the kind of person to make that judgement lightly either and personally have issues with "bad dog" legislation. I very much hope that they are being bred very responsibly, as I would like to own a Dogo myself in a few years, but I wouldn't trust that for a few years, yet.
I know a guy that uses Plott hounds for Black Bear hunting, but are aggressive in trailing Bears and sometimes get injured while treeing the bears because of there aggressive behavior. But he loves the Plott hound for tracking.
