My 1996 V-6 Explorer has suddenly decided that it will not start. It turns over fine, but refuses to actually run. Also, during the attempt to start the whole front shakes like it's trying to pull free. The last couple of weeks I've noticed that it's getting harder to start and even run at first. Now, nothing! Anybody have any ideas? BTW, it has a half tank of gas. Thanks for any help.
My first step would be to measure the fuel pressure. There is a Schrader valve (just like a tire valve) on the fuel rail on the driver's side, toward the front of the engine, just above the valve cover. Get a fuel injector pressure gauge and attach it to this valve. I forget what the pressure is supposed to be but so do a search on this forum to find it or get a Haynes manual for the specifications.
Also, it can be helpful to read the computer codes. I think for the '96 you need a scan tool to get them so you might need to purchase. The cost might seem like a lot, but they can easily pay for themselves in unnecessary or knowledgeable repair bills.
