My 460, WITH ONLY 500 MILES ON IT (!), threw a belt, causing the water pump not to turn, and the engine overheated terribly. After it cooled down, I filled it back up with coolant and replaced the belt. IT starts and runs, but runs poorly. Misfiring. Seemed to be coming from one cylinder. Checked the plug, and it was covered in oil. Cleaned it and put it back, but its no better, No water in oil, or oil in water, so I *think* my head gasket is OK. I also hear a slight ticking, like perhaps a stuck lifter. Any ideas on what could be causing this misfire? Thanks
Warped head, blown head gasket, or busted ring. Sorry, but sounds like your new motor is toast. About your only option at this point is to tear it down and inspect everything. It's the only way to be sure you didn't ding something else.
It's just me but, I would check the push rods, make sure they aren't bent and it could have a stuck lifter. Take the valve covers off and check the rods and rocker arms. If they are ok and you suspect a stuck lifter, although I'm sure this won't be a good idea to some of the guys, you can try transmission fluid. It goes like this, for me at least, change your filter, add one quart of your favorite transmission fluid and run the engine for about 100 miles. Doesn't have to be all in one day. After 100 miles, change oil and filter, run another 100, change fluid/filter again, then proceed with normal maintenance. I have had this work on stuck lifters more than once and at this point, what do you have to loose?
