ive got a 460 block i got it from my brother and he orderd a rebuild kit for it with stock size flat top pistons i guess what my ? is what kind of work should i do to the block before building the motor the motor was pulled out of a 78 f150 2wd it had about 100,000 mi on it. im wanting to put it in my 4x4 i want to put a decent cam in it but would it be alright to leave it at the stock bore? the truck will be diven in the winter months and a toy in the summer months im runing 36'' tires stock 9'' rear and a dana 44 front any info would be appreciated
You'll need to mic it and see how much the cylinders are worn. Check it in a couple of planes to make sure the cylinders aren't oval. You will likely need to bore it and get oversized pistons, but maybe not. Ford blocks are harder than Chevy's and they just don't wear as much.
Thats true my 84 460 went 221,000 miles no prob. broke the oil rings and caught it before it scored the walls. Run a hone down the bore to clean it up. new rings bearings and cam. that was 160,000 miles ago still strong. still std. bore. my 89 had 245,000 and the oil rings screwed up. the bore was still within reasonable spec.
when we pulled the motor it still ran but he was going to rebuild it then he bought a different truck that had a healthy 460 in it and we did some horse tradeing and i wound up with it what should the cylinders mic at? hopefully it wont need bored he bought nice pistons for it thank you for your help mike
I'm undecided between a 460, 400 or 351M. I've got all three and I'm just trying to figure out which one will be easiest and cheapest to build. Thanks, I appreciate the help and I will let you know if I have any more questions. Mike
I agree with "bigsnag" not much diff. in the costs to rebuild either one. It's the motor mounts, exhaust, acc. bracket's, etc... that must be used for the 460 that will cost you if you do not have these items. Do a search on this subject and read the experience's others have had. Good Luck!! If it's power your looking for remember this, "there is NO substitution for cubic inches"
First, there's no excuse for cubic inches, no replacement for displacement, you get the idea. Next, small block to bb, you will need motor mounts, either fabricated or store bought, I went with store bought, lifetime guarentee, about 100.00, L and L, something like that, out of Texas. Reason, keep everything ligned up right, which is critical to the lifespan.
