I headed out yesterday and noticed a buzzing sound from under the hood. As i headed home later that night, I noticed when I stopped at a red light the abs light would come on then the battery light would come on. The voltage gauge was real low but I was able to make it home. This morning it wouldn't start but I still had enough power to run everythig else. I'm guessing the buzzing was the alternator which in turn was the problem with the battery. By the way I have a 03 EB Expy with 48000 miles. Thanks for any help.
I had this happen in my 2001 EB a few months ago. Unfortunately, I tried to get a little too far, and finally the whole thing shut down on me, the last thing to go felt like the fuel pump. Before that, the radio had long quit, the heater was done, and it seemed every volt the system could spare was lighting what it could of my headlights, and trying to get gas to the engine. This thing even shifted like crap.
After getting AAA to flat-bed me home, the next morning I went and got a new battery from Ford. I got the biggest they had--60,000 miles and three New England winters told me it deserved it. This gave me enough juice to start the beast and get it down to the dealership for them to replace the alternator. I also had them change the belt while they were doing it.
FWIW, of course, it was the alternator. The new battery I bought was half preventive maintenance, and half so I didn't need to get a tow to the dealership.
sounds like a bad alternator...and the problem with that, is a bad alternator can ruin a good battery.
While it could certainly be detrimental to the battery over time (discharging it to a seriously low level) - one trip to the dealership (if not far away) isn't likely to cause permanent damage to the battery (IMHO).
