i am very interested in what went wrong with your tranmission because i have a 2004 f250 psd with 10500 miles and it is in need of a new trans which they do not want to cover. and i dont know what to do. any help would be great.
I need to ask how you found this site, curious one post and in an old thread…has your truck ever been in the shop before…This thread was on page 19 so the only way you could have found it is through search….very good for a new guy, I must commend you.
i found this site through f150 online and have look on it from time to time never had anything to ask until now . i bought my 2004 f250 lariat crew cab in december of 2003 it now has 10500 miles on it. it has only been in the shop once when i tried to get them to clean the sand out of my overflow bottle which i ended up having to do myself.
a couple of weeks after the battery died i took it to the dealer for shifting concerns ( i gave it a couple of weeeks to see if it would relearn shifting). since i bought the truck it has always had a flare up in between 3rd and 4th but not to bad. after the battery died it got worse (i have dissconnected the battery before but never had this problem) it would jump about 1000 rpm from 3rd and slam into 4th and at that point it would flash the tow haul mode and then it would shift more normal ( but not like when it was new)sometimes it would not even shift past 3rd and was even hard to get into reverse (50 % of the time reverse was fine the rest of the time it would slip so bad that it had to almost be to the floor to back it up and it shudder realy bad).
now first off i had a chip, remote start and push button start( no key needed) on the truck. the chip has been removed for a while and the push button start was added 1 to 2 weeks after the trans problem started.
the dealer sad that my push button start caused a drain on the ignition line and that caused low pressure in the tranmission which caused it to fail.
when i went to pick the truck up unfixed i talked to the tech and at first he said the above but after talking to him for a couple of minutes he told me that he could not find the low voltage problem and then said that his service manager told him that the codes that it had were related to a low voltage ignition problem and since i modified it that must be it.
i am a stereo installer and i put this kind of stuff on for a living (remote starts, alarms. navagation, lights, performance add ons, exc.) i used relays off the switches to support the load of the ignition. i went and found out which feed wire went to which ignition and connected them so it was just like the factory i even made it so that the accesories dropped out while starting just like the factory.
when i had the truck towed home i checked it myself and found no problems
but i still dont know what to do i dont have the money to just through away on a transmission which i feel should be cover under warranty. but any info would help and i would be thankful. by the way i was upuntil now a die hard ford fan but this is going to test me.thanks

Superdude, go to http://www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/60bulletin.htm. Do a search for transmission. There are several bulletins. I would do some sweet talking to the dealer and see if they can't determine that it was a problem not related to the chip or any other mods.
The above link takes me to a retail business. I too would like to know what the problems are with Superdude and SuperF250duty's trannsmissions because I too am having problems.
Although this site may not have many tranny problems, They are definitely happening. Just hope someone here has an answer. BTW I have tried this question several other times and have had much response.
Motorhaven, the sponsor of this forum (and why it is free!) does like for you to at least look at their products that help pay for the sites high dollar hardware, software, and support....
but if you insist, you are presented with a link to go thru to your other site...
sorry to hear about all the tranny trouble. I know my own personal experience with my truck is that the engine and drive train worked alot different after the first 600 miles.I don't know what the manual says. I really don't care I always thought it was good common sense to kinda go easy the first 500 miles!
Hey Super Dude I have an 04 6.0 SC 5-sp Torqshift and had the tranny replaced
due to tow haul flashing during long downhill runs. Also, had problems with engine
surges at 55-60 mph. Had the truck in the shop on 4 different occasions for these
same problems, each time they would replace some part that they thought might solve
the problem. They claim that it was difficult ot figure out what was going on because
they could not duplicate the problem. So, on the third visit I had taken the tech out
for a drive and had the problem duplicated. He then made a call to the Ford people
who was helping him with this problem to inform them that the problem had been
duplicated in his presence and then they allowed him to replace the trans. The new
trans was installed and all the problems are gone. Failed to mention earlier that these
problems with trans started with the truck having having less than 500 miles.
I guess I shouldn't be so critical. For everyone who has had problems I'am sure Ford is doing its best to resolve the issues. I guess I just haven't heard from enough owners who have not had one single problem.

All owners of these trucks have a "purchased" right to be critical. In several cases I do not think Ford is doing it's best, or anything for that matter, just covering their collective behinds. Critical thinking is what solves problems. If it were not for the critical people on this website there would be a lot of ignorant people out there, not knowing that they aren't the only ones with problems and Ford would be capitalizing on our ignorance.
I have found one truth while dealing with any big buisness, they are not my friend, buddy or mentor, they are in this to make money (from us) pure and simple. Does this mean that you won't run into someone who has a consience and will try to help or do what's right? No, it just means that you should treat this like any buisness deal and be critical to the point of finding out as many facts as you can. Knowledge is power! To that end I am really surprised that Ford has not made a move to shut this site down yet.
I say thanks to FTE daily for A: giving me some interesting reading and intellegent people to converse with while I await the rest of the world to wake up and B:Arming us with information that would otherwise be buried or destroyed.
I do agree. I am a Die Hard Ford man. I have had 7 trouble free trucks since 1989. This is the first truck I have had with so many issues and the transmission is at the top of the list.
I am also anti-GM, But I got to wonder if they are on to something having a killer transmission designed and built by an outside vendor. It is the single driving force behind some of my chevy friends decision to go GM on their latest truck.
mike808 at what point did you take the truck in for service to get it fixed. see i didnt take it in untill the trans didnt work. all the little issues didnt bother me and every one told me that is just how it is so i never took it in. the biggest problem is since there is no past history they said there must have not been something wrong. also what did they say was wrong with your tranny replaced and did you have a problem in reverse with slipping just so i could get a starting point.
This is why it is important to take it to the dealer and have your problems documented. You should document all visits and conversations of a critical nature.
Wow, t_j82, I thought I was a critic. I like my truck and I think the dealer is trying to keep a customer happy, but not at their expense. The dealer service department has done me right as far as I know. Former President Ronald Reagan was correct when he said, "Trust, but verify."
Just my $ 0.02 worth 'cause I can only go from what I have read here and at other sites.
The issues (though few) that are transmission related seem to evolve primarily around the planetary gear. I have read where complete transmissions have been replaced and I have have read where just the planetary gears and associated parts have been replaced via rebuild.
Again, from what I have read, there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to relationships to build dates, heavy towing, no towing, programmers, etc...
