6.0 or V10

I am looking at upgrading to a new tow vehicle soon. I currently own a 2002 F250 crewcab, shortbed 4X4 with the 7.3PSD. I've owned the truck for two full years and I have well under 20,000 miles on it. I tow a 11,000# fifth wheel camper less than 2,000 miles a year and other than that, the truck sits unless I need or want to drive it. I have a little commuter car for work. I love towing with the diesel but am still very leary about the 6 liter. Another thing is diesel fuel around my house is always at least 10 cents a gallon more than gas. I looked at a Dodge with the Cummins diesel but I just cant bring myself to buy a Dodge. I am also concerned with resale value because I never keep my trucks past the warranty. I am looking at getting a crewcab, longbed dually 4X4. Any input would be appreciated.

I generally favor the V10's for low mileage use and infrequent towing. But with you wanting a crewcab DRW 4x4 I would go diesel due to the resale/trade in value the next time around. Not too much demand for a V10 DRW 4x4. You are also pulling a pretty good load for the V10 although it's rated to pull that much. The diesel will be a better choice for your use.

Get the 6.0.
The extended life of a diesel will not be of much use to you, but the mileage will be better, resale value will be better, and that is a pretty big load for a V-10. Not that the V-10 can't haul it, it would just be working VERY hard. If you think the 7.3 is nice, wait till you get a 6.0!

Hedgehog1 Welcome to FTE!

I would tend to agree that the PSD is the better choice towing that much weight, but with your expected usage of less than 20K in two years, and occasional towing of the 5er, then the new 3valve V10 will handle that load easily.

PSD will get better milage but you knew that. You can do the math on the different engine option costs. In the long run you are in good shape either way, can't really make a BAD choice with your needs.

Happy shopping and let us know what you get.

I don't have a problem with owning another diesel. I just have bad luck. If there is a lemon of a 6.0, that will be the truck I get. My so called tried and true 7.3 has seen the dealer 6 times in 14,000 miles. Once for weak batteries, twice for fuel leaking down the back of the engine, once for domelight wouldn't shutoff, once for gas pedal replacement and once for fuel sending unit. I hear so much negativity about the reliability of the 6.0 that it makes me nervous. That another reason that I actually looked at the new Dodge. I have 4 friends that tow RV's all over the country and swear by the cummins with the 6speed stick.

Hedgehog1, just to warn you, this is a very touchy subject on this forum. For some reason, most threads on this topic end up getting locked because people on both sides can't behave themselves. Since you're new to FTE, and welcome! , I have listed a couple of the more recent threads on this topic.

I agree with johndiesel, this thread might get locked. For the best information do a search in this forum and the V10 forum. People have gotten out of line when talking about gas VS diesel.

WELCOME TO FTE!!!!!!!!!

hedgehog1 if you go with the V10 be sure to get the 4.30 gears, the new 3v V10 will do the job and it will not over work the engine. I pull 15K with a 2000 DRW 4X2 4.30 gears and I can pull in overdrive 80% of the time. I only put 10K on the truck a year but 7K of that is pulling my 5ver.

Whatever you decide it will be a good choice. One thing that you see in the 6.0l forum is some people stating they have problems. I posted one thread about problem free 6.0s. I got a ton of replies stating there 6.0s are fine. Do a search on that forum and youll find many people who have had no issues. Better yet talk to people around your area that have them. Thats always the best bet. I cant blame you for your concern. I was worried also. I ve talked to several friends of mine that have the 6.0 and they have had no problems. I am seriously considering buying one. The rebates are darn good. Myself I wouldnt even consider a Dodge there trucks just dont measure up to the Fords quality. Ive seen the quality in some past Dodge pickups that pretty shoddy in my book. Oh sorry I hope I didnt start something here. Get the 6.0 youll like it. Fords the only way to go. BTW if anybody sits in the back of a Dodge crewcab there going to be cramped. No room back there. Your going to miss that roominess if you go Dodge.

6.0 or V-10 there should be no argument. Its a Ford. The Dodge guys probably wont look at this since theres no reference to Dodge the thread.

I would have to agree about the 6.0 PSD. Even though you are going to pay more per gallon for diesel where you're at, the cost of pulling 11k on the V10, even the '05, would be more in my opinion not to mention everyday driving. Some other things to look at with the 6.0 are up front pricing and/or maintenence costs. You say that you rarely drive your present 7.3, you would be looking at the same kinda stuff you already do. Not so much with the V10, though. Both are very capable, I would literally write down the pros and cons for both and decide that way. For me the only issue was up front cost. Good luck.

I would drop the extra for the 6.0. I love our 7.3 but I love my 6.0 even more.
