hedgehog, why are you selling ur 02 7.3 with such low miles... with 20000 miles it is barely broke in yet....as far as the original post it depends on what u want... last saturday i drove an 05 psd and v10... the psd had a little hesitation off the line but then pulled like a son of a gun(my 01 7.3 has no hesitation but doesnt have the top end pulling as the 6.0) remember there is no subsitute for cubic inches)..the v10 shocked me...it was fairly quick off the line (i think i remember the sticker saying it had 4.10 gears) vs. an 03 i drove.
there is nothing wrong with the v10.... it is (my opinion) that the psd is better...
1. pulling power
2. fuel mileage
3. reliability(i might get beat up on this one) probably why ford gives 5yr 100000 miles warranty on engine?
4. resale and attractablilty of the diesel vs. the gasser
now on a positive note i think the 05 v10 will turn some heads on us diesel dudes-and dudetts. better engine, transmission....
oh and as far as mileage...i own a 28' toy hauler when loaded weighs +/- 100000lbs..
our 3/4 4x4 suburban with the 8.1 litre gasser pulls great but gets 6.8-8.0 mpg...
my 01 psd 4x4 pulling the same trailer got 10-11 mpg and did not seem to struggle as much... whatever u get you wont go wrong..later..............
5.
Yeah, why get rid of that truck, it's hardley used. The power train has a long warranty and if you are worried about the rest of the truck you can buy extended warranties way cheaper than a new truck. Keep the thing, when it 5 years old it will only have 50,000 and will have great resale.
I want a long bed. I'm sick of the sliding fifth wheel hitch. I also need a higher GVW. As of right now, when I hook up my fifth wheel camper to my truck, I am at least 600lbs. overweight. Those are my two main reasons.
I think both are great motors. You will be happy either way. I own a 2004 F350 6.0PSD and love it. Last weekend at the dealer I drove a 2005 V10 truck. It was a very nice truck, quick off the line, but did not have nearly the high end compared to the 6.0. I mean it was powerful, but nothing like the diesel. Just my $.02.
I had a 2000 F-250 with the V-10, which I loved, but then I traded it for an 04 F-250 with the 6.0!!! Oh man!! I thought my V-10 had power, which it does, but dang, this 6.0 blows my V-10 away! I HIGHLY recommend the 6.0!!!
Get what you want. The current V10 owners will tell you to get the V10 and the current PSD owners will tell you to get the PSD. Both engines are very capable. Use the search function and you will find many hours of reading on the pros and cons of each engine. If you get the V10 and tow a lot I would recommend the 4.30 gear ratio.
I'd keep what you have. The 7.3 is awesome and for the price of changing to a new truck vs. the $.10/gal difference in diesel fuel around your area + the 6.0 motor's problems, I'd keep the 7.3.
I really hate to fan the flames cuz I really do like both motors but had to justify even owning this big of a truck. (retired enlisted Army and not swimming in $$$)
I have three days experiance with my new 3Valve V10 and hooked it up yesterday to my Trailer. My reference background is with a late model 460, a late model 7.3, a 01 310 HP V10, and this new unbroke in V10. I have never driven the 6.0 but trust me there are a bazillion of them here and all of us at work talk trucks all day long.
They (PSD) pull more and get better MPG, facts of life. It takes a bit more digging to get most of them (PSD owners) to tell the truth about servicing the oil burner. They always seem pi$$ them off, when I mention my 3 month 3000 mile service schedule and how little it costs to just put new oil and filters in any time I want for under $30. I remember my used 7.3 servicing but that one isn't a fair gage, cus the previous owned flogged the crap out of it. She ate and leaked oil like it was free (fortunately for me it was, wink wink).
2005superduty; up the thread a bit, suggested that the new V10 would and I quote: " the 05 v10 will turn some heads on us diesel dudes-and dudetts. better engine, transmission".
I accept that the PSD is the big boy motor and is a tough pulling machine but my new V10 significantly closes the gap and I really love how quiet it is.
I will accept the fact that towing heavy it will cost me in reduced MPG.
If cost is a big factor the V10 is up to the task you describe Hedgehog1
one thing about a gasser when towing a long trailer is most gas stations arnt designed for large vehicles around the gas islands. Truck stops are so it is usually eaier to fuel up a diesel. the trucks all enter and exit in one direction without some moron teenager driving his fart can rocket around in your way. there will be exceptions though like everything else.
