A while back i started noticing a light knocking in my 360, then later i noticed cylinder 8 wasnt firing... i went through just about everything on the ignition, and still nothing, so finally i decide to replace the valve cover gaskets, just because they are old and leak a little. i take the valve covers off and see that the intake rod for 8 is gone, just gone.
I look down the tube and i can see the tip of it, but i cant get it out, it looks like it is broke in half, but i dont know where the other half is, i imagine rattling around the cam... so the plan is to take the intake off and get the pieces out, then put in a new one. but before i had my truck, i had a 93 escort... so im no V8 pro
So here are my questions:
WHat is required to take off the intake manifold?
is there a possiblity the head/cam/rocker/valve/ have been damaged?
Finally, i would say cyl. 8 has not been firing for a good 500 mi, maybe more, and i have developed a semi heavy oil burning prob on the drivers side exaust... could the cylinder getting starved for intake cause fried rings or something? have i about killed this motor by waiting so long?
I would check that the exhaust valve on that cylinder is opening. I suspect that it is, since it's burning oil. What happens is that the intake valve stays closed, and since the exhaust still opens you build up negative pressure in the cylinder, drawing oil past the rings. It then finds it's way into the exhaust manifold where it is burned.
I dont think anything would have been hurt. Stick a new pushrod in there and see what it does. You'll probably find the old one on top of the valley tray.
Great minds think alike i suppose, or at least ones that understand engines completly (im gettin there). after i posted the question i realized it must be pulling the oil past the rings because of the vaccum, i just wasnt sure if the smoking prob would be corrected with a new pushrod. guess i will have to see. i finally went and picked up a chiltons for the beast, so now i can take the intake off. im going to replace both the lifter and the pushrod, due to that other topic about the moon shaped pushrods... maybe i have a lifter prob... lets just hope i dont find anything else wrong in the process
Thanks again

Whatch out for the Intake ! It weights a ton! I felt like a wimp after trying to muscle that beast out of the truck. after I broke it free from my 360 I tried to lift it...I though it was hanging on something, It wasn't, it was just that heavy.
80 lbs at a bad angle feels like 150lbs! unless you are using an engine hoist, don't try this one by yourself !
Good luck!
Tony
im use to pulling my 85lbs 4v intake off my 390 this will be the 5th time in the past 6 months ive done it sense the motor was rebuilt, and i yet have had the truck down the track or even around the block yet, 400hp likes to tear stock parts up.

I would inspect that lifter and clean it and then put it back in. Lifters and the cam wear in together...a new lifter could wipe out that lobe on the cam. Some people get away with it but its a real bummer when you have to pull the motor apart for a new cam. Another thing to check is your rocker shaft...it may be bent or broke in the stand.
If the plunger is stuck in the lifter they can be taken apart. I would also check your valve train out...could be a galled rocker, sticky valve. A pushrod bent that bad must have went for one hell of a ride.
Thanks for all the input, i am trying to get it done today, but its fantasy football draft day so it wont be till this afternoon. my friend whos house im going to be doing it at builds SBC for late model racing, so im sure he can be alot of help where my own knowledge and chiltons cant.
