i accually have a new messege ,

with my radiator completely drained ,out of my 352/maby 390
i filled , today with new coolant, and topped with water,

then here is the weird part, i started my engine , it sounded fine
maby small misses in the timing, it started to knock thump allmost in time
every 4 seconds "thump" loudly, so i turned off the engine
it kept thumping the same way, it finnaly stopped, . burping time?
water pump blades worn? so hot air is moving around?
fuel pump? thanks paul

The only way to know:

STROKE: 352 = 3.50" / 390 = 3.78"

Did you let it warm up enough to open up the t/stat ??? If so the burping/gurgling bit should have gone away after a couple minutes give or take. But Ive never heard of a water issue causing these noises.

How do you measure the stroke to verify the engine size.

I have tried dowels but found they rub and hang. I prefer a piece of white house wire about 8" long with a slight curve in it to use with a Sharpie.

It is best to have a helper that can either hold the wire/Sharpie or turn the engine.

Pull the ign. key, and the wire from the coil, remove one of the front spark plugs (passenger side is a little more accessible). Poke the wire in the spark plug hole, rest the Sharpie against the manifold, and with a socket on the crank shaft nut rotate the engine a couple complete rounds.

Measure the length of the mark on the wire. That will be your stroke.

Keep the wire still if you can. I found placing a finger on the end was enough.

Remove all of the spark plugs and the engine will turn easier.

To measure the stroke:
Obtain a piece of stiff, straight wire, about 12 inches long or so. White house wire is best.
Obtain a marker, such as magic marker.
Remove a spark plug.
Insert the wire into the cylinder.
Rotate the engine by hand until the wire will descend no further.
Mark the wire at the lip of the valve cover or similar spot on the engine.
Now rotate the engine by hand until the wire will go no higher, and the piston is at the highest point.
Mark the wire at the lip of the valve cover - or at the same fixed spot on the engine you marked the wire when it was as low as it would go.
Remove the wire, and measure the distance between the two marks.
You now know your stroke.
If you want to know what engine you have, post the measurement here, and be sure to include the type of engine, whether a 6 or an 8 cylinder, and any other information you may have about it.
