My 1991 E-250, inline 6, automatic has been acting funny lately.
Sometimes when it shifts from 2and to 3rd it slips or hesitates. The engine speeds up for just a second and it goes into gear, without banging, very smooth.
The sticker inside the door is marked G under Trans. I don't know what model tranny it is.
What could cause this? It doesn't happen every time. Am I hurting it by continuing to drive it?
I would appreciate any help I can get with this.

How many miles on it? I presume you've checked that it full of fluid. What does the fluid look like? Red, or mucky and smell burned? If the latter, a full fluid and filter change may be in order.
If it's a C-6, it has a modulator on the rear side with a vacuum hose to it. Check for a vacuum leak.

Thanks, I'll check for a leak. The odometer says 83,000. It was 32,000 when I bought it 4 years ago. It was very clean, but, I assume it was 132,000. Fluid is right up there, clear red, like it came out of the can, no muck.

If the vacuum line to the modulator looks good with no cracks, see if it fits tightly over the stems on both ends.
If so, the diaphragm in the modulator could be bad.
When you pull the vacuum line off the modulator, see if there's any trans fluid around the inside of the hose.
The modulator is cheap enough to replace just to eliminate it as the problem.
All transmissions endure useage waiste and a filter may be in order now with that mileage. Also, I am not up on the Ford sceen in a while and I will tell you of a problem I had for a short while, I kept downshifting or slow upshifting at normal speeds. This was on a carb type 300 cid auto in a van.
The passing gear rod had not been used in a while by the PO and someone used the passing gear during a test drive and all it was, the passing gear rod got rust on it and where it passed through the exhaust manifold it stayed wide open and gave the trans fits, I seen this after driveing with the doghouse off and down the road a few times and put it at its resting place and the trans was fine, kicked it again and the same trouble.
I lubed the Hardend o-rings and oiled the entire rod after removing the surface rust. It worked fine for years after that.
Thank you all. Interestingly enough, I did use the kick down recently for passing. It is a rare event for me. I will check that and the modulator today.

I was refering to a carbuated model, but all the same if it is mecanical, either cable or ROD, I would recommend checking there first before you spend big bucks on a Transmission. Good luck to ya
