I really hate to tell you this, but that 1.7L V4
was first, designed, and second, used by Ford...
in the late 50's...

It's also the basis for the following V6's used in
the US...2.6L, 2.8L, 2.9L, and 4.0L...

As long as 4 cylinder engines has come up, I have to say that the International Scout used to come with a big inline four. I believe it was about 200 cid. That, would be a good Ford Ranger base engine. But when the big three came back to four cylinder engines they made these puny little gas mizers. Now I understand that International four would be a real dog at the races, but I bet it had gobs of tractor torque.

So run down to your local Ford store and buy
yourself that crate engine...oh, thats right
Ford isn't offering that on anymore...

>Next is the 427 SOHC

Same goes...

I had a 289 in my race car. Few people ever get to be behind the wheel of a car with a professionally built racing engine in it. I've driven a vehicle with every Ford engine made (modern-era) and a lot of them have been impressive, but for me, there was nothing in the world (engine-wise) as beautiful as that little small-block at full song. It was still pulling at 7000. I always chickened out at 6700 because I loved that little engine so much. There was more than one missed shift though and it passed 7500 (at least) before I got out of it. Never lost more than a rocker arm stud. I sure do miss it some days.

Have played with a lot of ford engines, right from the flattie up to the 460. Favorite (rite now) is the 351c, lots of power for not much work or cost. Presently have 3 of them. Back in the early days of truck pulling, built up a 300-6 that out pulled a lot of v8s. Ran a planed head, 2 450cfm carbs, clifford industries cam and headers. Could not get it to rev past 6,000 but never ran out of grunt. Love the high revving boss 302, have had a ride behind a SOHC 427 with the 2 4barrel setup and was an awesome experience. This was in a 2600 lb barely street legal, tube frame pro-street mustang. FRightening thing. Chrysler hemis and 6 pack cars are neat also. :-staun

How about the good o' 400? Only god knows how many miles are on the 400 in my F250 but it took a good amount of abuse (had to rev it past 3000 RPM to upshift before I got the C6 rebuilt) and still runs strong, and starts right up with a flick of the key even in the cold Colorado winter mornings. Power output is pretty low for it's size but it's has good low end torque and responds well do many of the low-buck mods...

I'll have to say any of the 429/460 385-series big-blocks produced between '68-'97 are my favorites.
