Switch wiring question.

I'm a basic houshold wiring kind of guy and I've always wondered why you are supposed to ground switches? I can understand outlets but switches?

The switches have a ground lug because of the different covers that can be used with the switches. If you use a metal switch box cover, according to NEC, the cover must be grounded. The switch acts as part of the grounding path when the cover is screwed to it.

This was off the top of my head. I will assume no liability in this! Use the info at your own peril!!

So if the cover plate isn't metal then you don't need to use the ground lug?

I believe you are still supposed to ground it. The cover screws are still exposed.

Any internal short inside the switch will go directly to ground and not some where else.

It's safer.

The breaker will trip and remove short.

If the short is not removed then the internal components will heat up and catch fire.

Always ground your circuits.

Use the ground lug!! Why not, it's already there. As stated if there is a short, the breaker will handle it, not your bod!!!

If you have a ceiling fan that comes on with the light and it's motor seizes, that ground wire will come in handy.
